I started casodex and Lupron several weeks ago. One week ago I had first of six infusions of taxotere. After the treatment the Onc. nurse gave me sheet of paper with office numbers and emergency numbers for after hours. Keep in mind that the Oncologist I use are located about 2 hrs away.

One of the issues on this telephone list was a temperature of 100.4. If that happened I was to proceed to the local emergency room and call the clinic. My temp had been fluctuating 98.8 -100- and finally 100.5, So off we go to the ER. I had a neutropenic medical alert card so I did get quick service. By the time I got to admitting nurse my tempt had fallen to 98.4. I told the nurse I did not belong there but she insisted.
Ran urine, chest xray, blood panel and a bunch of test. Now my temp is still around 98.4. At that time I attributed it to Mickey Mouse excuse for a thermometer at home.

Tonight it started again. New thermometer temperature bouncing from 99 to 100, back to 98.7, then up to 100.1 then up to 100.5. Right now it is back down to 99.8.

Anybody else having a problem like this? Is this a hot flash from Casodex and Lupron?

Hello Mr. Bill,

As I was going through TAXOTERE chemotherapy treatments, my oncologist and chemo nurses gave me a packet of after-care instructions, which included a new thermometer.

My doctor stated that any fever that spiked over 100 was a cause for concern, and that I was to then report to the clinic, due to the compromised immune system that usually accompanies chemo treatments.

I was instructed to carry the thermometer with me, just to be on the safe side. I know other friends of mine who received the same instructions.

I do recall slight fluctuations in temperature, in the days following my chemo infusions. Fortunately, none of them warranted a trip to the clinic.

My doctor was very cautionary about the dangers of fevers while undergoing chemo treatments.

So --- keep checking your temperature, from time-to-time --- keep drinking water --- eat healthy foods --- exercise a bit, as you can --- rest when you need to do so ---

Hey mr bill!!

Looks like we are on the same path at about the same time! I finished my first chemo infusion last week and this all still seems a bit surreal to me. But here we are. smile

I'm on Firgmagon, but did the Lupron/Casodex regiment when I did radiation back in '14. (Gad, seems like just yesterday.)

about day 3 post infusion, my temp spiked up to 100.5. I was just waking up from a nap wearing a sweatshirt and hat and having a hot flash, go figure. So I waited a bit and cooled off, took off the hat and re-tested about 15 min later, still 100. Anxious to say the least. Retested with a different thermometer and found 98.6. Yep, my new, fancy scanning thermometer may have been a poor investment. But it made me look and keep checking. Used my scanning thermometer on my wife and it came back 100F again. (But then again, she's always been pretty 'hot'.)

So, I don't know if there is a real bottom line. Keep checking and stay vigilant. I remember the note that if your temp stayed over 100.4F for an hour, then call in. So, give it a bit of time to cool off. Grab a back-up thermometer and use another test subject to see if it your equipment is working.

Was in ER Tuesday with a fever 100.4. by the time I got to er it was down to 98.4. They checked out WBC count and sent me home, saying it was borderline. Back in the er Thursday night with 100.4. Temp had again returned to 98.5. If it wasn't for er preadmission nurse I would have left. Checked WBC, which had a value of 1, don't know how they figure, but like to see it at 5. Laid in er till 3:30 Fri. morning, then up to isolation (nice view of lake).

After IV antibiotics every 7 hrs, all kinds of blood test my WBC went to .9 on Saturday morning. Now I am getting worried. Prednisone for rash, Neuprogen (SL?) to boost white blood cells. It is now Sunday am and my WBC up to 1.6. Infect. Disease Dr. says no longer need antiobiotic through IV, that pill form will work, but up to Hospitalist MD if I go home. After three days in isolation (flu is rampant) finally got home, took a shower and am trying to figure out what happened.

Infectious Disease Dr. says it is common to see a spike in Temp. when loosing WBC, also when they are rebuilding. I guess the nadir or low point of WBC count is 7 to 9 days aftert infusion. This all started on the 7th day and started to improve on 10th.

Been a long week.

Dang, sorry to hear that went on so long! I agree with Cyclone that the docs are making sure you stay healthy and out of danger.

The timing seems right for when your WBC count should drop and recover. Man that is a long row to hoe for the first infusion. Hopefully your MO will be able to help with some direction around this for the next infusion.

My thoughts and prayers are with you thru this journey. Stay strong and keep moving on!

No things are a little rough around the edges right now, but feeling better on day 12. Had a blood draw this morning to look for WBC. No results yet.
After spending a couple days in a very dry, isolated, bland environment I learned two things.

1. It is fifteen steps from corner of the room to the other, via the foot of the bed.

2. Onc., who did his fellowship with my current MO, told me you derive 80% of the benefit from Taxotere in the first three infusions.

Sorry to hear about the bumps with the chemo but glad to hear that you are doing better and keeping up the sense humor about the whole thing. Your fifteen steps comment put the "Counting flowers on the wall" song in my head and now I can't get it out!

The really ironic thing, other than the glass breaking in our Jenair happened about 7:30 this morning at 7:30 on my way home from blood lab. There was a light fluffy snow falling, dawn was just breaking, the large ships a long the Bayfront had all their overhead deck lights on; all was well with the world.

Then I hit a pothole and the windshield cracked from side to side.

Not whining -- Just my kinda day.

Hi Bill... dang, the same thing happened to me after my first cycle of chemo. 2 days after, temp slowly climbed for a few hours then by 9 pm it shot to 102 very quickly. Was still that way when I walked into ER. They stuck me in a room with those antibiotics stuck in me for 3 days. So boring. They finally let me go after the 3 day culture came back negative and sent me home with the antibiotic pills, just in case. The main doc there told me it could just have been my body reacting to the chemo, but they don't take chances. Glad it didn't happen again. My wife was on me with a thermometer for the next cycles. I just prayed it didn't go hi again and got lucky it didn't. I wish you luck on your treatments. Take care. -JR
