48 with most recent psa of 5.6

I am 48 with family hx of prostate cancer (father and grandfather). My psa in January was 4.3 and repeat psa this month wax 5.6. I am scheduled for ultrasound with biopsy tomorrow. Any advice? Should I be prepared to be told I have prostate cancer once pathology is back?

Any advice on what the likelihood is that I will be told I have cancer?

My husband has 18.80 PSA and is not cancer. ( 3 biopsies, 2 MRI) Uro told us he had numbers of patients with higher PSA were not cancer. There is chance and hope. Good luck!

Mine was 3.7 at age 47. Both of my grandfathers had it... and so did I. Hopefully you wont, but if you do, maybe it wont be too big of deal. Best of luck!

Just focus on the biopsy tomorrow. That's enough to get through.

Even if the worst is true, you have tons of options and likely it will turn out just to be an annoying health bump in the road of life.

Taylor, make sure to follow your doctor's instructions to the letter, this will minimize any risk of infection. If you're nervous (I know I was some six weeks ago), ask the Dr. for Lorazepam or Xanax. One tablet an hour before the procedure will help you relax, I'm glad I did it and normally I'm not a 'pill' person.

The procedure itself is uneventful, the probe in the rectum is uncomfortable, but that's about it.
Try not to anticipate the result of the biopsy. Nothing you do now will change the outcome. You are young, with a relaitively low PSA, sos most likely you will have plenty of time to research your options if you're diagnosed with a malignant neoplasm of the prostate.

Taylor - We're all different. One man may have a PSA of 7 or so, and not have cancer. Another man may have a PSA of 3 and be found to have cancer. Admittedly, your family history combined with a higher-than-average PSA is suspicious, but you will only know after you get the biopsy results.

At least you found us. From the cross-section of cases here, you can see that even with a positive diagnosis, prostate cancer is very often treatable and pretty often curable.

As the others have said, tell us the outcome of your biopsy. We're here to help you understand what the results mean and what you may want to do about it.

My urologist gave me a Valium to use before the biopsy which didn't do much for me. After about the third punch, I was super uncomfortable and even sweating. See if you can get something like would be used for a colonoscopy. Having said that, lots of the other guys here didn't have a big deal with the biopsy - we're all different.

And don't worry about the results, if it is PCa we'll all help you with your journey. (Also it might be at a low enough level to where all you need to do is active surveillance.)

Yaylor, the biopsy is usually much adieu about nothing. Still, I'm a nervous dude. I took a xanax before I left the house, another one On the way to the DR, and another one when I got into the waiting room. By the time they were ready for me I was so wasted that it was like I was transported back in time to Woodstock, and I had to be helped onto the table.

By the second biopsy, 2 years later, I wasn't worried because I knew it was no big deal. So I only took one xanax. It wasn't as much fun.

Well it's all over and now it is just the waiting game. Doctor said he would call with results. Didn't say anything except prostate was enlarged (35). Will be anxious to get results.
