“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” Stephen R. Covey, Motivational Writer

Amen to that...and an add on to your point ...if I may...this is why when you are in another country and you engage a local of a different language...and neither can understand each others language... they won't be able to reply...they use the more sensitive and honest methods of communication...smiles...bows...eyes...and lastly...touch...

A reminder of the classic line from the movie 'Cool Hand Luke': "What we have here is failure to communicate"
Daniell Ofri takes a whole book to address this issue in
What Patients Say, What Doctors Hear" ( see blurb below)
"Despite modern medicine’s infatuation with high-tech gadgetry, the single most powerful diagnostic tool is the doctor-patient conversation, which can uncover the lion’s share of illnesses. However, what patients say and what doctors hear are often two vastly different things.
"Patients, anxious to convey their symptoms, feel an urgency to “make their case” to their doctors. Doctors, under pressure to be efficient, multitask while patients speak and often miss the key elements. Add in stereotypes, unconscious bias, conflicting agendas, and fear of lawsuits and the risk of misdiagnosis and medical errors multiplies dangerously.
Though the gulf between what patients say and what doctors hear is often wide, Dr. Danielle Ofri proves that it doesn’t have to be. Through the powerfully resonant human stories that Dr. Ofri’s writing is renowned for, she explores the high-stakes world of doctor-patient communication that we all must navigate. Reporting on the latest research studies and interviewing scholars, doctors, and patients, Dr. Ofri reveals how better communication can lead to better health for all of us."

I'll pass on the chocolate donuts, however a vanilla bavarian cream filled would do nicely.

Thanks for all the great "understanding" replies.
Those asking for extra doughnuts, sigh,

I was told many years ago that
"God gave you two ears to listen and one mouth to talk."
Politicians are the worst, they are shaking your hand and looking at the next guy.
Most people to day have no idea how to communicate, they would rather have it be a one way street, they talk you listen!
Many people today would communicate better as caveman did, through drawings.
I have been in sales/marketing for many years and that is the biggest problem between the customer and the sales person.....communications
No chocolate donuts for me may I please have a jelly donut from one of those wonderful Jersey Jewish bakeries I grew up with...thank you or maybe two!!!

I work in software engineering and have found most problems are solved when you improve the quality of the communications.
Teams that can listen, adapt, and are willing to adopt new ideas are the most successful.

You're welcome.
I wish more on this forum would take time to be understanding rather than react with their own personal agenda.
Andrew
