So,I had my meeting with my surgeon/urologist, today. (Post op PSA's in my signature).
Takeaways...
He still calls recurrence at .2! He is aware of the studies that point to .03, which I printed out and brought with me. But his comment was there is no evidence that starting earlier, affects final the outcome (meaning survival).
The fact that my PSA is up doesn't concern him right now, but based on that, AND based on the fact that my final negative margin was preceded by a positive intra-operative margin, is why he wants to have me back in three months.
Even if I had a slight rise at the next visit , he wok;d not call it a clear trend
He thinks it was a smart thing that I went to see Zelefsky (he calls him "Mikey" lol.), on my own, and that the baseline MRI was done.
He still thinks there is a good chance THT I don't recur, ever.
His best advice to me for now is to eat healthy, watch weight, exercise, and calm my brain (I'm actually reading a book by that title right now)
He said he is a big believer that inflammation in the body can produce increase in PSA. (I think he meant can produce recurrence.) and he is also a big believer THT anxiety will cause inflammation.
And my big picture question.... if not from cancer recurrence, where is this minute (.033) amount of PSA coming from? His answer was it could be cancer cells, or could be produced by the cowpers gland or male breasts.
Lastly, he told me about
a 2 day symposium at Mt Sinai (his hospital and that he put together), that takes place next week. Said speakers will be The Who's who of prostate cancer from all over the world. Suggested I register and gave me a brochure.
It is targeted to medical professionals. But he clearly saw that I was more knowledgeable than his average Joe patient, and that I was hungry for knowledge and answers.
I'm tempted, but I think I'm gonna pass. I really and truly need a mental health break from cancer. Too much of it going on between me and others in my family (which means I might disappear for a while, although not sure I'm capable of it)
Anyway that's what I got. It was a fruitful meeting. But I'm thinking that AS LONG AS MY PSA REMAINS STABLE, assuming it does, I might just get the tests done and not keep going back for visits unless I have more specific questions.
