xgeva - anyone had dental problems

My husband developed ONJ after years of xgeva and extensive dental work, even though the MO and dentist were communicating. There are a few threads about this If you want to search it. Gary had implanrs, crowns and root canals. He developed necrosis in the bone around old implants and where teeth were pulled in the upper jaw, even though it occurs most often in lower jaw. In retrospect, he would have had less pain and problems, if he, like Frank, had discontinued it sooner. It is a double edged sword. There is definitely a benefit to having the injections in avoiding fractures, increased mets and spinal compresion. But at the first inkling of a problem, I think you are wise in discontinuing its use.

I was originally diagnosed with so many bone mets that my NM Bone Scan lighted up like a Christmas Tree, along with a PSA of 5,006. I was not shy about things that might help protect my bones. The thought of my spinal or pelvic bones failing was very frightening for me. I went along with 29 months in a row of IV Zometa (zoledronic acid) from my local oncologist. Also did routine 6 month dental cleanings and check-ups to avoid having to do anything invasive with the jaws. Have since dialed the Zometa back to every 90 or 120 days (I forget which). I probably have enough Zometa in there to last the rest of my lifetime. No symptoms of ONJ or other bone problems, to date. Have been on Lupron for 3 years and 10 months. On added Xtandi for 9 months. Whether Xgeva (denosumab) or Zometa (zoledronic acid), the amount of scientific data from clinical trials drops off considerably beyond 24 months out.
