Hello Brothers , I have had hernias on both sides over the years. Im starting to feel that pain again on my right side where I had a hernia repair 3 yrs ago. With the power of SBRT compared to IMRT is it more possible the radiation created a hernia ? It been almost 2 yrs since my last zap.Could of it been the planning of the rad team that maybe went thru too much tissue in that area. ? Thanks All ,SemperFi, John

Just an opinion, John, but I doubt that any radiation would increase the chances of a hernia presenting after treatment. I have heard many accounts of hernias subsequent to surgery, but I really doubt that SBRT would weaken muscle tissue in an area away from the focus of the beams.

Maybe TA knows more?

In conversations with my RO prior to SBRT I told him I may have a small hernia on one side - it does not cause any pain and over about a 2 year period does not appear to enlarge.
He did not voice any concerns that SBRT would have an impact if I did have hernia. He said it should show up on CT scan but he said he did not see a significant hernia though it could be small. Based on this
experience I doubt the SBRT has any significant impact on hernias. Other doctors
seemed to believe from visual/touch inspection I have a small hernia but were uncertain. After the SBRT I have no change in the area where I might have small hernia.

I can’t say for sure as I’m not a medical professional but my Dad also has a hernia and like the above poster, at no time was it mentioned that radiation could be detrimental to it.

I have had three hernias and was told that when multiple hernias appear like that there is probably just a genetic factor at work. Slightly weaker tissue hence more likely hood of a hernia.

At my 5 week ( 6 would have been Christmas) post catheter removal appointment with my Surgeon he mentioned hernia for the first time. When I asked what I could start to do as far as lifting items and exercises, he said to limit lifting as much as possible, it won't cause a complication with the surgery, however I would likely have a hernia issue down the line.
