There are times when words fail.
So many things that should be said.
So many things that could be said.
But in the cold light of day, silence,
and a tear are all that cross the rift
between broken hearts.
In grief and sadness
how can any word comfort,
or dull the hammer blow?
Sometimes the right word is no word.
Just a touch and the tear that says it all.
----------
Peace,
Andrew

Mystery is always a powerful element in a poem. There is mystery in this one, as the reader asks himself what it is, the "hammer blow," that has caused the melancholy, the sadness in these lines.
We are not told what it is, but it doesn't matter, as whatever the cause, the crisis of feeling is the same, as to whether words or silence and tears become the better vehicle for expression of the feelings that are swirling here.
The tears win out, but only after the poem concludes, in a kind of debate within itself, line by line, that "… words fail," and the "right word is no word."
And a nice touch:
"… silence, and a tear are
all
that cross the rift"
and
"… Just a touch and the tear that says it
all
."
Good poem.

Your words touched feelings I've had but had no words. You give me the feeling that is ok.
Thank you,
Jake

Logo - Thanks.
81 - as always you point out things I hadn't considered when I wrote the poem, but are every bit true. Thanks!
Jake - Sometimes there are no words. Sometimes it best to say that.
Peace,
Andrew

The connection achieved through sharing is the key to spiritual awakening and peace. Ironically a poem about
no words that uses words to explain. Peace. Denis

Andrew: There is comfort in sharing even if no words are spoken, as you so eloquently stated. For some there is great peace to be found in solitude.
As always thank you.

Andrew,
I am generally not one to be able to appreciate poetry. Yours, and especially this one, are exceptions.
That said, Wings' response echoes my own.
Thank you.

Real support needs no words,
Blah....blah...blah.
Rather it requires solitude,
delivered with true empathy.
