NYC Fun Guide

Second the Botanical Garden - we were there Saturday. We, too, are bot gardens freaks! When there, walk through the Fordham campus and onto Arthur Avenue. There you can sample great Italian food and pastries and check out the Italian markets. There isn't a bad restaurant there. Also love the Frick! Another fun thing to do in NYC is walk on the High Line.

Touring the United Nations is a good outing. I visited the building when it opened and again last fall, 70 years later. Iconic spaces where the Security Council and General Assembly meet. Tour guides share a lot of accurate history. Hope for the world.

Ok I better chime in since it was me on that other thread who said it's not possible to have fun here. That's on,y because I just got back from winter in Florida, where I didn't think about doctors for one minute. And now that I'm back, being bombarded with them.

But nyc can be fun

Go to a Mets game at Citifield. Not just a fun ballgame. A great ballpark, fairly new, not too big. Great restaurants. Always a fun crowd. And what's better than baseball in the spring?

Go to Ellis Island. Where many of your first generation immigrant ancestors made their first stop. Fascinating history.

Go to a Broadway show. Of course Hamilton, if you can get tickets, and pay for them without filing for bankruptcy. But also, go see Jersey Boys. One of the best shows I've ever seen.

As the resident librarian on this forum, I would eagerly point out that with regard to libraries NYC offers a virtual treasure trove of all kinds of them, with all kinds of specializations, and virtually all of the highest quality.

Many of the specialty libraries in NYC are considered the equal of or even superior to many college libraries elsewhere in the country. (Another area where the Big Apple does things in a huge, grand style).

And so many of them are open to the public, or charge a reasonable entrance fee, and offer not only books to read but also extraordinary art and cultural exhibits as well

The New York Public Library system (the branches along with the headquarters library) is easily one the best public library systems in the country. And its exhibits are always first rate

The Morgan Library (named of course for its founder, financier J. P. Morgan) is as much an art museum as a library, offering in addition to viewings of its iconic Gutenberg Bible exhibits of the first editions of prominent American and European authors, as well as displays on such diverse topics as the history of printing, literary trends, ethnic authors, and almost anything else one can imagine.

Of course going to see a library may not be the first thing that comes to mind when visiting NYC, but if you do get the chance to do so, you will likely find a lot more in that city's many wonderful libraries than just books.

On beautiful days in NYC, a nice leisurely walk on the Highline is lovely and free, it goes from Midtown down to Chelsea on the West Side. Central Park is always beautiful, just stay out of there late at night! It's mostly safe even then but you're taking your chances.

Another thing to do for free, if you catch it on the right night, are the free concerts in Damrosch Park by Lincoln Center. Saw Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets there last summer and it was PHENOMENAL!

For something fun that costs a few bucks, I love the water taxi ride from the Battery up to Midtown. Great way to see the city of you're a newbie IMHO.

NYC is possibly my favorite place on the planet. I'm weird that way.

I'm that way also geetarman...can not get enough...and the street food and the holes in the walls along the streets are cheap eats...as they say here in the islands...onolicious...ono means good in Hawaiian...

For me I think it's because I'm pretty hyperactive and borderline ADD, so the energy of the city actually calms me down.

That hits the nail on the head for me, G-Man. It's the special energy, not places to go or things to do.
Thirty-some years ago, I flew into LGA late at night, settled into a barely-second-rate hotel in Midtown, went down to the street looking for a bite and wandered into a 24-hour Greek grocery. The clerk tried to sell me some rolls on the counter that he swore were fresh. I was skeptical. "They look hard as a rock," I said. He smiled broadly at me. "You right. I throw them out now and bring you fresh from the back." He did, and they were.

Why are so many men of a certain age raised on the east coast so enthralled with retirement in Florida and cadillacs as the car of choice...hot...humid...hurricanes on a regular basis...bugs and stuff the size of Them...1954...movie....Ive been there a few times...both coast fort Meyers the best...but not for me...Maui no ka oie...not rubbing it in...it s got its negative too...but the weather and climate is not one of em... Oh btw I was raised in south county RI...specifically peace dale...and point Judith/galilee...wher you get the ferry to Block Island If you were ever there and had clamcakes at Georges Restaurant....I was their first bartender...the summer of 65...up stairs at the channel lounge run by George and Edna Durfee and their 3 sons.....ahh Life is but a dream...btw the only place you get clamcakes is RI...not crabcakes silly....clam cakes and jonny cake meal{ better haveI a cast iron skillet...no not stomach}...RI staples...I do not believe you prato about your distaste of NYC...I will not...I can not....
