Back in the day it was reefer madness in times square...watching the smoke rings ripple out...umm or was it Ripple and not reefers...I was a kid...but the big apple always fascinated me as I took the 3 -4 hour train ride from West Kingston R.I to visit my uncle ...The ride thru the slums...since torn down and replaced by the projects...was my first taste of seein hardcore poverty...it wasn't pretty...funny...life...yeh...as we age...it all gels into a spun factory which if we are thoughtful...even with the bad...rolls out a certain beauty...right on time...seemingly without purpose...yet there is a tiny seed...which only ones self can choke...or give breath to...and then...

My stomps was E LA, hung out in Watts, ran with a Latino street gang. *wipes away a nostalgic tear* Still have a knife scar on my face as a reminder of the 'good old days'......makes Detroit seem so mellow and peaceful too.

In those days I was a combat crew member in the Strategic Air Command, but internally felt I had much in common with those who were activists for Peace, in all its many forms.

I was an armchair hippie who lived in the midwest, My older brother was a bohemian of the beat generation. I read the books and watched the films. I did some drugs. But I was never a real street people. The protests I got involved in tended to quickly morph into causes I was not particularly interested in. I just knew I didn't want to get drafted and sent to Vietnam.

But while taking an extended road trip the summer after my freshman year, me and a group of guys decided to head to this music festival I'd heard about. Turned out to be quite an eventful trip. Yes, I was there. Then a few months later I drew a very low number in the first draft lottery. I ended up enlisting soon after my draft physical in order to have some say in what I might end up doing. That part worked out very well. Never saw SE Asia.

Two years ago clearing out our house for our retirement relocation I had hoped to find some of the treasures from my youth.... my Woodstock ticket stub and my military dog tags. Disappointing, but we literally had a TON of stuff to go thru after forty years. Most of it was junk. Then cancer hit us both, and we came out of it with our values changed.

It's what we still have in our minds that we treasure the most.
