Stan, I hate to keep beating a dead horse....but you keep bringing this stuff up.....

Are you following ANY advice you're getting in here, or from your docs? I mean as far as things like diet and fluid intake and alcohol and coffee or anything?

I'd also like to tell you something about surgery--that you seem to think would have been a walk in the park.

You said you are a large truck mechanic. I assume that means moderate to heavy lifting, lots of body movement to get into tight places, etc. The standard recommendation post surgery is a 15 lb lift limit for 6 weeks after surgery. After surgery, you loose a LOT of abdominal strength and mobility, in the kind of job you have, it takes months to get it back. I went back to work after 3 weeks, mostly due to cabin fever, and worked a few days and then took more time off. Most guys who have surgery report that it takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months to get physically back to 'normal'. Never mind the guys who spend 6 months getting their continence under control ( as many as 50% take at least 3 months) and the guys who have permanent ED after surgery.

Just had to get that off my chest.

You do realize that there is a reason why the door to the vault is 1 foot thick, right?
You did notice that the techs leave the room, right?
Ever wonder why they put a lead blanket over your chest at the dental office? Yeah, apples to oranges here, but I think you get my drift.
That pretty much sums it up as to how bad radiation is, so if you think/thought that these treatments were like a sprained ankle where you will be good as gold in a few weeks to a month, then you were fooling yourself.
For the most part, all of us on this board have cancer, one more time, cancer, not a bum knee.
My father died of lung cancer, it was not pretty because he found out when it was to late. I do not wish that on my worst enemey.
You on the other hand have a huge chance to have been able to nip this in the bud and live many more years. Yes, its not a walk in the park, but did you really think it was going to be?

Whatever guys I get it ...hind sight is 20-20 ...radiation is a guessing game and hoping game ..I wish I realized this before .so u better hope you don’t get any of the 15 side effects and if u do u better hope they go away and u better hope u don’t get a secondary cancer from the radiation ..u better hope it kills the cancer ..u better hope it diesnt come because u can’t take it out ..u better hope it’s not in the nodes because they are guessing it only happens 5% of the time .....I can go on and on ..I’m upset sorry ..u guys say surgury is no walk in the park .....well all u have to hope for really is your not totally incontinsnt or total ed ..2 things .at llesst it’s out and u know exactly what to expect ......all I know is my RO says it will all get better only 5% don’t once again guessing ....

Stan,

The older you get the more you will realize that certainty is not your friend. Death and taxes are said to be the only certainties. I think some of the members here are estate planners so we might be able to help some with the taxes part. But, don't you see, uncertainty is your best friend. It's called hope. You have lots of opportunity for hope right now. The acute side effects from radiation fade with time. There may be some long term annoyances but they can be dealt with as they arise.

Sorry I dog I feel u my dad died of the same thing ...before I started I was confident then all this anxiety hit me because all these side effects came about ...I guess lack of sleep don’t help

Stan, you should red the post by Peter. Then read it again and again and again. His advice is pure gold. Once you accept uncertainty as part of life, then life and all of its adversity becomes much easier to handle.

I had surgery. Clean pathology, no issues and I was told I have a less than 5% chance of recurrence. Now I’m doing hormone therapy and about to start radiation, for a rising PSA that indicates cancer remains in my body.

Uncertainty. Accept it. If you continue fighting the adversity, rather than accepting it, life will continue to laugh at you and make you miserable.

2) get a prescription for SSRI -- I did this
