Radiation and teeth

More likely a coincidence or another disease process going on. Bone loss is a rare possibility post RT. I had some gum issues recently and was concerned it might be due to the RT, but they did some scans and checking and decided that I had no bone loss.

I had to have the laser gum surgery and that took care of it. Not fun to do, but wow, my teeth haven't been doing this well for years.

yes, I have heard of people losing teeth to radiation, but it took a lot more than what we PC guys get exposed to.

Yes it can. But not associated with radiation and PC.

I had 3 bouts of an ultra rare and dangerous cancer in the past. I underwent major radiation after 5 surgeries for the cancer. (Twice on my scalp and once in my throat). I was grossly over-dosed on the radiation and in the end, it rotted out every single tooth in my head, as well as do severe bone damage to my upper jaw.

Before the VA would do the major dental surgery, I had to undergo 30 treatments of hyperbaric sessions, to make it safe enough to operate. Then about 4 hours of surgery. VA even sent a dental radiation expert to examine me. I was at high risk for some weird kind of radiation infection.

Took nearly a year to heal, and another year for dentures that still can not be worn. Been toothless ever since, and still at risk for that weird infection.

VA estimates that I was given 3x too much radiation at the time for what was needed.

No worries for me, I have store bought teeth....LOL

ADT can trigger some bone loss and osteopenia, but it could also be from other causes too.
