Bohemond - Sounds like a major adventure, I lived in DC area for 10 years so have seen quite a bit of the nearby civil war and US History sites. I have family in Chicago and a son in Nashville so I could make that trip down over the course of a week. Do they have hotels nearby with shuttles, etc? Do they book up a year ahead of time? We go to Bayfront Blues Fest in Duluth MN every August and the nearby hotels (4-5 of them) book up about 6 mos prior so you have to plan ahead or will be driving or Ubering around.

spottydog - Cannot deny that Smokey is good, still around doing Motown specials and fests. It goes without saying that Wes Montgomery and other jazz greats could really play and I listen to them occasionally. Thanks for the link, always good to remind me of them.

The Quality Inn and the Hampton Inn in Wilkesboro are just a short quarter mile walk to Wilkesboro Community College, which is the grounds for the festival. I'm sure they both book up way in advance, so if you are going I'd book now if possible. If you book a place further away and rent a car, there is free off-site parking near the festival with shuttle buses to the festival grounds. The festival parking area shuttles are run by local Boy Scout troops for free but with donation buckets next to the driver, if inclined. BTW the festival is run as non-profit with proceeds above cost for performers, tent and sound rental, etc. going to Wilkesboro Community College. It has funded an automotive technician facility among other programs over the years.

There are 13 stages at the festival, some outdoors, others in college buildings. The Watson Stage is the main stage. It has the Cabin Stage on it's right side where smaller bands play while the main stage is being struck and re-set between acts. There is reserved seating with plastic Adirondack style chairs in the first 50 or so rows in front of the Watson stage. My wife and I have kept our seats in Row 28 near the Cabin Stage for years. The reserved seats cost more, but behind the reserved seats is a very large field of first-come-first-served area where people can set up their own chairs. The Watson and Cabin stages are projected onto screens so everyone has a good close-up view, even at the back of the field. There is on-site storage for anyone who wants to check chairs, instruments etc. overnight. Other stages include an Americana stage, a Traditional stage, the Hillside Stage, plus a dance tent, jam tents, etc.

The reserved seats at the main stage are open to all until after the dinner break around 5:00. If you are squatting in chairs in the reserved areas, you are supposed to leave if the rightful owners turn up. But speaking as rightful owners, we just sit somewhere else if someone is in our chairs. In fact we often move further forward in the daytime if better seats are open.

Thanks for the info, similar to many fests in smaller towns. Sounds like it is run well after 30 years.
Just for the heck of it, I just checked hotel rooms and Hampton was sold out and Quality Inn was $500/night with a few rooms left. We run into the same thing in Duluth and for most other established fests. All the rates are more than double ($300+/night) to be within walking distance a year ahead of time and we have to book by Jan for the August fest (usually do in Dec). If you want to park a RV or trailer next to the park, that is another difficult task as there is not a lot of space on the downtown waterfront although it looks fun and convenient.

Mumbo mentioned the high cost of rooms during events and that reminded me of when I went to Duluth a few years ago to run Grandma's Marathon. Rooms were hard to find and pricey so I found out that the University was renting out dorm rooms. Price was great, room were fine, the shower was large and down the hall.

Back to music, yesterday in my Pandora feed, set to "Matt BIanco," a British pop-jazz band I like, they played "Demon Kitty Rag" by Katzenjammer. Wow! 4 Norwegian women. Multi-instrumentalists. They play a pop-folk, klezmer, gypsy thing with LOTS of energy. Check them out on YouTube.

Vince - Interesting band, listened to a few cuts.

Duluth is a funny place, it has about 2 months of summer but it is cooler down by Lake Superior where the festival park is. In August, you have to dress for all weather since it can get cool and breezy with a little rain thrown in then rocket up to 80 in the hot summer son.

Grandma's Marathon is a big deal up there, never too hot. Glad you could make it. There are other events in the summer that pack the waterfront area like Tall Ships and Blues Fest.

My youngest daughter asked my the other day, "Why do you always stream the Dave Mathews Band when you drive?". My answer was simple. "When I am in a good mood listening to DMB keeps me there. When I am grumpy or a little depressed, DMB allows me to relax and be in a good mood."

Other choices for driving, Led Zeppelin in the car while enjoying an occasional cigar.

Also play alot of Celtic Music - traditional, modern and punk. Nothing gets me going like "Whiskey in a Jar" by Thin Lizzy, anything by the Pogues, or a good bar band playing "Drunken Sailor, South Australia, or any other number of tunes." And of course, "I am Shipping out to Boston" by the Drop Kicks".

I am a simple man, with simple pleasures.

There was a lot of good music, but being stuck in the past is a sign of anxiety & depression. There was a lot of bad music back in the day, too.

The advent of VH1 and MTV was kind of the death knell for music. And by music I mean lyrics and the instrumentation.

Since then it's about videos that highlight dancing instead of lyrics.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of music videos that capture the feeling of the song (David Lee Roth and California Girls,...LOL ).
But, videos tend to pull us away from experiencing the music as WE see it, and instead push a manufactured narrative on to the listener.

No, I wouldn't say that is true. Like mentor595 said, maybe "for you."

The music that I listened to through that bygone era (and today) was (is) not played on MTV or VH1 (I don't think...I really never watched it). Sounds like you made some bad choices.

Excellent case-in-point: Derek Trucks, age 39, on Rolling Stones magazine's list of 100 greatest guitarists of all time...even though about half the all time list is dead now. There's some great music being made out there today...but I don't think you'll find his music on MTV (although, like I said, I really don't know cuz I don't spend any time there).

blackjack - The Rolling Stone list should be titled "The 100 Best Players Who Held a Guitar And Were Popular or Played With A Popular Band" and pisses most decent guitar players off. Joni Mitchell, give me a break. Derek Trucks might be on a legitimate list but about half on the list can be replaced with better "guitar players".

Where was I? Every generation has that problem with the new generation's music which I can trace through my grandfather, father, brother, and sons likes and dislikes. However, crap music is now duplicated and spread at record speed that makes most of us from the older generation wonder. There are still decent artists coming along but the music business is not the same, just like the rest of the digital age, where electronic promotion is key and the thought of carefully shopping for records or CD's in a store to spend your hard earned money on is gone.

Never saw MTV either and VH1 sounds like it might be good for prostate problems...

I watched MTV for a minute back in the day. There were good videos, and bad ones. “Unplugged” had some great stuff.

Possibly the worst video off all time - Mick Jagger and David Bowie singing “Dancing in the Street.”

"Best" lists create opportunities for disagreement/dialogue...but this list is a guitarist's best-of list...not a novice listener's list. Joni Mitchell doesn't wail on an axe in perhaps the way that you personally like, but she is widely recognized as brilliant, inventive and pioneering on the acoustic guitar. Distinctive picking hand, and creator of >50 alternative tunings. In a separate RS article she was referred to as "one of rock's most daring and uncompromising innovators." Probably the greatest complement that an artist could receive is the number of people who attempted to copy her style...there are many. Google the amazing comments Jimi Hendrix (#1) and Jimmy Page (#3) made about her guitar style.

But the thing you are right about is that there is nobody on this list that anybody else has never heard of...across many musical genres. I've seen 16 on the list performing live:

I'm not sure I would fully support Bruce Springsteen being on this list...he may not even the best guitarist in the E Street Band. But while he may not be a guitar god, he uses the style and skill he has on guitar to serve the needs of the song and the show, not as a centerpiece. He’s also wise enough to bring on other players with complementary styles to fill out the records and shows, adding variety and a full range of sounds. There's something else to his guitar playing that makes it stand out: emotion, power, dosage, and a very characteristic sound. I saw him in 1978 (the year the music died for mattie) in Charlotte, NC during the Darkness on the Edge of Town tour...great clip from that tour of perhaps his best guitar work in this 11 minute version of "Prove it all night." 'Twas a great show...remains on my personal list of Top-10 concerts in my lifetime...

Maybe so but if you read the thread, I am far from a guitar shredder lover. Would I pick Leo Kottke before Joni Mitchell, I think so as detuning a guitar is nothing new and makes some songs easier to play, maybe she did it more often than others and came up with something unique, beats me. Hey I liked Glen Campbell as a guitar player going back to his days as a studio guitar player. He will always be remembered as a crooner.

I agree with Bruce Springsteen not being on the list but never been a huge fan, just one album is enough for me to get my Bruce fix once in a while. I never listen to it for the guitar music, maybe sax sometimes.

Your list is pretty good, a number of people I like are not on the list but would certainly agree with most of them. I would have to study the Top 100 list to be more specific but there a quite a few that could be replaced by better guitar players who are not quite as noteworthy.

We are list-creating species. Rank order. Categorize. Define. Place in boxes. Organize.

I get it, but when it comes to something like the arts where it is so subjective, well, someone is going to be left out and someone else is going to get in for reason that can be quite arbitrary. I don't remember seeing Tommy Bolin on the Rolling Stone list?? But, hey, it's just a list and certainly doesn't take away from my enjoyment of his "Teaser" album.

I dabble in the visual arts and have never really been interested in showing or selling what I create (drawings and photographs). 4 years ago I decided to enroll at the local university and to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. As part of that process I must show my work and I must enter work into the annual student exhibition/competition. A "curator" is brought in to select which works get into the show and which pieces receive the awards and prizes. Work that I submitted last year that was rejected was accepted this year. Different curator.

I am happy that artists of all types, performance and otherwise, create what they create and that we can search through and view/listen to more that we have ever had access to before. Some I like better than others but none of it is "bad." OK, maybe the manufactured stuff is not that great but digging around, especially locally and internationally, there is some outstanding art to be enjoyed.

One of the things I like about the RS list is that it is a list made by a long list of accomplished guitarists--not a list by novice listeners--which gives it a powerful legitimacy for the novices to dig into..."the details are left to the student," as the professors said. It's not a perfect list...but it's probably the best list.

Vince - Tommy Bolin is one of those players I don't understand, very good player but did not play with anyone consistently so only some people heard of him. I did not hear about him until my later years when I was talking with folks about guitar music. Not many know who Steve Morse is and he plays with Deep Purple also nowadays. Maybe Deep Purple is a curse for guitar players. Joe Satriani was not there either, Deep Purple got him too it appears.

blackjack - The recent PCa screening procedures came from a list of accomplished doctors... who are we to disagree smile There is a lot of compromise required to get things out of committees so I can imagine the members of the group doing the Rolling Stone list having to bite the bullet and agree to choices they didn't like to get it done. The group was basically the rock generation players and involved people and skipped jazz, country, and blue grass players thus it is not representative of all guitar players and should be titled as such.

You're right, Mumbo.

The list has country notables like Chet Atkins and Carl Perkins, but two of my personal favorite country guitarists are not there: Vince Gill and Keith Urban. (I saw both of them at Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival in MSG...Keith Urban and John Mayer (fantastic guitar player, too) did an incredible "Don't Let Me Down." You're right, the list sucks.

Everyone owes Chet Atkin so he ends up on a lot of guitar lists, a player’s player. I would add Brad Paisley as a good country guitar representative, He and Keith Urban tear it up in concert. His album “Play” is good listening if you like his guitar playing.

I must say I wouldn't have a lot of the guitarists on that list as a top player, especially Clapton the most overrated of the lot, each to their own of course and it is much dependent on the genre of music that you favour.
There is a quite a few missed off including James Honeyman Scott,Marv Tarplin, McCartney, to name a few. I was glad to see Scotty Moore and Mick Ronson on the list.

I would agree with that. Liked him in Cream though. Saw him in concert in ‘78. Good show and good guitarist, but I never understood what the “God” thing was about.

I have gone both ways on Clapton over the years. Every time I listen to the original Cream version of Crossroads I think the fellow may have some talent as this was the holy grail for guitar players back in the day. Impossible to find but there is a recording of a Eddie Van Halen and Barbara Walters interview where Eddie plays the entire guitar part of Crossroads start to finish that he learned as a young player while Barbara watched. He said Clapton was his biggest influence.

I read his autobiography some years ago and it is quite a life story. He really hit bottom over a number of years (he quit drugs then became an alcoholic) and had to rebuild himself. I had heard that he could hardly play the guitar after that.

His stints with the Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek & The Dominoes were pretty productive. Then there were a lot of years that could be skipped.

I have a semi recent video called Legends where he plays with David Sanborn (sax) Joe Sample (piano), Steve Gadd (drums) and Marcus Miller (bass) where he can play with other greats and fit in. Pretty good for an old guy, maybe not God but hard to dismiss his accomplishments.

spottydog - I think the difference is whether a guitar player is “good” from a talent and skill level as judged by other good guitar players or whether a guitar player is noteworthy for a specific accomplishment or association with something noteworthy.

Most rock guitarists will have Joe Satriani on their lists. The guy can just play and has taught many. If a top 100 rock list does not have him on it, it is deficient. A taste of Satriani:

McCartney would be in the second group. No one dare say anything bad about the Beatles which I understand as I am a fan but they were not the top players in the world but great composers, arrangers, and singers and they deserve the title of best band and songwriters IMHO. The same people always put Ringo on the top drummer lists as well which is where these lists fall short.

Fun talking about them though, beats politics.
