I think soap probably works well enough.

You should not allow denatured alcohol touch your skin. It contains a number of poisons and a number of nasty things that will dry your skin and could make you sick - sometimes it contains both ethanol and methanol.

For hands you want rubbing alcohol which is mostly isopropyl.

Buddy, clearly the situation in Italy appears at this time to be more serious than China, South Korea or most countries, though Iran is clearly troubled. Indeed, as experts have reported, Italy appears to be an outlier and not the norm so far. I am certainly not making light of that or in any way down playing their situation. Thankfully most areas have nowhere near their situation and I certainly don’t expect the US or Canada or UK or Japan or other continental Europe to have such an experience. So far the numbers from those areas are in no way indicative of such a situation.

And I am clearly cheerleading for the least human and economical damage possible from this outbreak. It appears that you are quite pessimistic and I am optimistic. Since neither of us, or anyone, can accurately predict the outcome, we are of different opinions. Odds are overwhelming that we will both be wrong. Let’s keep a positive respectful dialogue and sharing of information. Let’s hope and pray for the best outcome.

As a side note, I went to the food store this morning and did an inventory while wandering around with the other retired people. Bottled water was stacked to the ceiling, some sizes of bleach were out but plenty of other sizes were available, some Chlorox wipes were out but other makes of similar wipes were plentiful, and Purell hand sanitizer was out but surrounded by various 99% antiseptic soap bottles. Most importantly, there was plenty of currency of the new millennium, toilet paper.

That doctor calls COVID-19 the "Wuhan Virus" and runs something called the Hotze Health and Wellness Center, and sells vitamins, among other things - he's dismissed in my book. I wouldn't see him as a patient, nor would I listen to his advice regarding the pandemic.

12:05 pm: US cases surpass 1,000

COVID-19 cases surpassed 1,000 in the United States on Tuesday, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

The virus is now present in at least 35 states and the District of Columbia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Almost half of all U.S. cases are in Washington state, California and New York, where the governors have all declared states of emergency to free up funding for communities battling outbreaks.

At least 28 people have died in the U.S. due to the virus, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the U.S. was reported in Washington state in January.

From a local perspective: At a church leadership meeting yesterday evening, we had a long discussion about what we should do...we have already deployed hand sanitizer stations in the building, etc. As far as other action items:
A letter is going out to everyone on the email and hard mail list today, among other things is suggesting that our older members stay home. Additionally, we did discuss a closing plan--and will be paying attention to what the local health department is recommending as well as what the local schools are doing.

Given that Montgomery County PA is the center of the PA outbreak (it has jumped from 2 cases on Saturday to 12 yesterday), this seems to be something to plan for. We also think it's moving really fast. Reasonable decisions today will be superseded by more stringent actions tomorrow.

What I note is that we are in the rapid, exponential growth part of the infection curve. In hotspots, you'll see 2-3 cases bloom to 20 then to 100 in a few days (see Boston). It's interesting to me that (except for California), there case count seems to be concentrated in what are considered "northern" states: Alabama, Mississippi, Texas among others are not reporting any cases...yet. Texas is particularly interesting given the massive industrial infrastructure along the gulf coast--the sheer numbers of people who are constantly travelling in that area would suggest that Houston and it's environs from Pasadena to Port Arthur could easily become a hot spot.

Italy stats: Italy has now 10,149 confirmed cases of the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University and Italy’s civil protection agency, and 631 deaths from the virus, up 168 from Monday.

Italy’s Civil Protection Chief and Coronavirus Emergency Commissioner Angelo Borrelli said Tuesday that said that 45% of those that have died were aged 80-89 and 32% were in their 70s, 14% were over 90, 8% were in their 60s and 2% were aged 50 to 59.

Clinical course and risk factors for mortality of adult inpatients with COVID-19 in Wuhan, China: a retrospective cohort study

Findings

191 patients (135 from Jinyintan Hospital and 56 from Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital) were included in this study, of whom 137 were discharged and 54 died in hospital. 91 (48%) patients had a comorbidity, with hypertension being the most common (58 [30%] patients), followed by diabetes (36 [19%] patients) and coronary heart disease (15 [8%] patients). Multivariable regression showed increasing odds of in-hospital death associated with older age (odds ratio 1·10, 95% CI 1·03–1·17, per year increase; p=0·0043), higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score (5·65, 2·61–12·23; p<0·0001), and d-dimer greater than 1 μg/L (18·42, 2·64–128·55; p=0·0033) on admission. Median duration of viral shedding was 20·0 days (IQR 17·0–24·0) in survivors, but SARS-CoV-2 was detectable until death in non-survivors. The longest observed duration of viral shedding in survivors was 37 days.
