Here at Kaiser in CA, they are encouraging phone appointments and video calls for this kind of followup visit - unless the doc needs to do an exam or run a test, many of these follow ups are just, "How's it going? Need a refill?"

Now, odds are, you might catch coronavirus and might not even get symptoms. Great. Good for you. Very bad for everyone else, from your own grandparents to the random older person who got on the subway train a stop or two after you got off. My personal as well as professional view: we all have a duty to stay put, except for very special reasons, like, you go to work because you work in healthcare, or you have to save a life and bring someone to hospital, or go out to shop for food so you can survive. But when we get to this stage of a pandemic, it's really important not to spread the bug. The only thing that helps is social restriction. Ideally, the government should issue that instruction and provide a financial fallback—compensate business owners, ease the financial load on everyone as much as possible and reduce the incentive of risking your life or the lives of others just to make ends meet. But if your government or company is slow on the uptake, don't be that person. Take responsibility. For all but essential movement, restrict yourself.

Health tip for all of us: Vitamin D supplementation protects against acute respiratory tract infection, patients who were very vitamin D deficient and those not receiving bolus doses experienced the most benefit (70% less chest infections whether causes by viruses or bacteria - an amazing stat).

This was a huge study. The benefit was also huge. It is NOT some kook site like Natural News etc., or someone hawking useless supplements. This is the real deal.

Yeah, I dunno. Neither does he. If you read his article closely everything he says is a reason it wouldn't be that surprising if it stays around as the weather warms. He is being cautious -- saying that it's not safe to assume that it will let up -- it might --probably will -- but it would be dangerous to count on it.

One thing that has me hopeful that the Wuhan coronavirus will follow the usual seasonal trajectory for influenza is those world maps with the big and little red dots. The big red dots seem more concentrated in the northern temperate zones than the southern. In the north we are in early spring, coming out of winter, and in the south they are just starting to cool off. Doesn't prove anything, of course. Lots of things concentrate in the northern hemisphere -- dry land, for one -- but it strikes me as hopeful.

Peter I offered no opinion other than Marc seems smart - it was just a copy and paste job. I did read it closely, several times.

Looking at the various maps, I note that it is quite hot and humid in Singapore, it being one degree from the equator, and they have cases. Proves nothing I suppose...

I am a board member of our running club and we decided to cancel today's 5K last Friday. We had about 500 people signed up for this annual event but wanted to join all the other activities in town and postpone it until fall. We have a no refund policy in our waiver and while the response has been overwhelmingly supportive we've had a few whiners and few scammers.

One person claimed that she'd bought winter runner gear and "St. Patrick's Day accessories" and is demanding a refund and coverage of these expenses.

Another guy lambasted us for being part of a effort to further this "hoax."

Yawn.....

In the meantime the temperature dropped overnight to 12 degrees and we've had about 3 inches of snow. Lots of people are probably breathing a sigh of relief and looking forward to a fall event instead.

Hey Buddy - I flunked 3rd grade science, much to the dismay of my parents. Looking at your first two links, I failed to find a recommendation for how much D to take. There was something in the first about 800-1200 units... I think... but that was also in relation to sun exposure. I've been on 2000 I.U. of D3 daily for years, plus I live in Southern California. Thoughts?

2019Guy - 1000 I.U. (25 mcg) is the recommendation I saw from Dr. Campbell. It is what I take. The study showed greatest benefit to those deficient in vitamin D.

You can add Washington state to that list as well. People are going to panic us into a depression. I am torn by what to believe or not. I am a cusp boomer 12/1963. I am not in the high risk group but my lack of government trust and belief that everything out of a communist country is a lie leaves me concerned. On some level I believe that we are being lied to to slow the panic. I also believe the scariest part of this disease is how people who do not live in a country where they can be shot on sight for civil disobedience will be reacting to quarrentine and shortages. Glad I don’t live in the city.

Maybe Peter should consider a new support forum: one strictly for Covid-19.
We're all concerned about this pandemic, but this particular support group is supposed to be about prostate cancer. A couple of guys seem to want to be the surgeon general or head up the CDC. I suggest that we're all capable of getting all the information about this novel virus from those sources. It's interesting to see how other members are reacting around the country, but these OT discussions seem ultimately out of place here.

Why the attempt to control the conversation? To censor? People are talking about this everywhere on the planet right now. In every workplace, in every church, in every online "public square" and they should be. You're telling me people with PCa aren't affected by COVID-19?

Who's trying to control or censor? I'm not, but I do sense who's trying to pontificate about this global pandemic. There are many, many topics of conversation in the public square, Covid-19 being right now certainly the most important one, but I really fail to understand a 21-page thread on an OT topic, especially when the media and other forms of official communication offer authoritative information with advice on how to deal with this enormous challenge.

It is still early days, but using existing data we develop a large ensemble of ecological niche models that project monthly variation in climate suitability of SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus throughout a typical climatological year. The current spread suggests a degree of climate determination with Coronavirus displaying preference for cool and dry conditions. The predecessor SARS-CoV was linked to similar climate conditions. Should the spread of SARS CoV-2 continue to follow current trends, a worst-case scenario of synchronous global pandemic is improbable. More probable is the emergence of asynchronous seasonal global outbreaks much like other respiratory diseases. People in temperate warm and cold climates are more vulnerable. Those in arid climates follow next in vulnerability, while the disease will likely marginally affect the tropics. Our projections minimize uncertainties related with spread of SARS CoV-2, providing critical information for anticipating the adequate social, economic and political responses.
