Important topic, impacting many members here ...
I have been on continuous ADT shots for 7 years.
To answer your question --- yes, I have continued working full time. I stay active, but I do set a reasonable bedtime.
My initial PSA was over 100 at diagnosis, and ADT shots became my first frontline treatment.
My best advice?
Take a proactive approach, and stay ACTIVE --- there can be some weight gain associated with ADT shots.
Staying active can also go a long way in counteracting the fatigue or lethargy that many fellows experience while on ADT.
There's nothing better than a daily walk, hike, or a visit to a rec center to maintain basic fitness, and boost energy.
Keep it simple, and do the active things YOU enjoy ... walk a trail, play some golf, mow the yard, dig in the garden, dust off the exercise bike in the basement, or walk the dog.
A bit of physical activity, each day, will BOOST energy.
For me, a walk in the evenings, after a busy work day, works wonders. On weekends, I walk first thing in the morning and again later in the day.
To mix things up, I explore walking trails at recreational lakes and county parks and state parks on weekends.
Any physical activity works --- so, go with your interests, and stay consistent.
A word of caution --- ADT can weaken bone integrity. Your doctor may recommend calcium tablets. In my case, I receive two PROLIA shots, each year, to maintain bone strength.
So, when winter rolls around --- find ways to stay active, but avoid slips and falls on ice or snow.
For me, when it's icy outdoors, I find an indoor location for walking safely. I also have a stash of one-day passes to the local recreation center, that I use on icy winter days.
My lesson learned? Stay active, stay consistent, but mix it up, have some fun, and do what works for you.
You could even join your husband, if you wish, and go for a daily walk together. Explore a park, find a walking trail, and jump in the car on the weekends and walk in a state park near you. Just one possibility ...
Beyond that ... if your husband begins to experience hot flashes while on ADT shots, some of these simple strategies can provide what I call "cooling comfort" ...
Here we go ...
Ceiling fan or room fan in the living room and bedroom; ice water; cool cotton bedsheets & cotton pillowcases; cotton briefs or boxers; and a frozen ice pack kept handy in the freezer.
Many fellows experience "night sweats" while sleeping ...
If that happens, keep a glass of ice water or cold water bottle on the nightstand, at bedtime.
Another easy thing I do for night sweats --- I put TWO cotton pillowcases on my bed pillows --- launder often.
For most social occasions, to stay cool and comfortable ... I wear an untucked long-sleeved cotton Oxford dress shirt with a light athletic cotton t-shirt tucked in, underneath --- simply roll up the sleeves & adjust the buttons on the Oxford dress shirt --- perfect for most casual social events & restaurants & get togethers.
My favorite of all these things? A ceiling fan in the living room and bedroom!
Worth every penny!
Here's to staying ACTIVE & staying comfortable!
