Lost and confused

Had RP 5 and a half years ago. PSA tests showed that some cancer cells had escaped. Recent tests showed the PSA numbers were progressively increasing up to 0.5. My Urologist sent me to a Radiologist Oncologist. He recommended a PET Scan and he suggested that I do 8 weeks of radiation and HT(Lupron) for two years. On my way home from the PET Scan he called me with the results. I put him on speaker phone so my wife could hear what he had to say. He reported that no cancer was found and that he suggested I do the Lupron. I had the first shot three months ago and my body started the predictable changes. When I go back for my second shot after three months, my Urologist asks me when I start the radiation treatment. When I told him that radiation was not ordered, he said that he would not have started me on Lupron alone unless my PSA was up to 30 to 50. So no Lupron shot and he says that I will see you in a year. I called my Radiation Oncologist and he said that he would never have said do Lupron and no radiation. Yet my wife and I clearly heard him say no radiation, just do HT.
I am 75 years old and lost as to what to do. I am thinking of getting the opinion of a Urologist or Radiation Oncologist in one of Bostons highly rated hospitals. Anyone have some thoughts?

Yes, head to Boston for an evaluation. Your posting history is not very clear. Could you summarize what happened between 2012 and today. You had RP five years ago (2017?) Were there biopsy results that pushed you in that direction at that time?

The disorganization with dr offices drives me crazy.

For what it is worth, there is no danger being on hormone therapy before salvage radiation starts. It weakens the critters and then the radiation finishes the job. Many guys are on hormone therapy before salvage starts, so you are not in any sort of trouble and there is nothing medically “wrong” with your situation. Its just annoying/disquieting they do not communicate with each other properly.

The only question it seems is whether you will get radiation to the prostate bed or full pelvic radiation. That will be up to your radiation oncologist and you.

Perhaps to simplify things maybe just see the RO and get your lupron shots from that office, This way you do not have to coordinate between two offices. After your two years is up, switch back to the MO for monitoring.

It's not surprising that the PET scan didn't show anything, but based on your rising PSA it's pretty clear that there are some cancer cells still lurking, most likely in your prostate bed, that could be targeted by radiation. So it's unclear to me why they're not continuing with what would be a pretty typical salvage radiation plan. I would look to have your care transferred as soon as practical. Good luck to you!
