BBC report on Radiation

I’m pretty sure the PACE-2 trial is about SBRT versus IMRT. The dose reduction is in the number of treatments, not the total radiation load. So instead of 40 or 20 visits, it is 5 visits.

The total radiation is the same, or close.

You can Google on PACE-2 trial and there are already papers published in toxicity results (same for IMRT and SBRT). They describe the protocol.

I think it confirms the belief with solid data.

Moving to 5 treatments from 20 or 40 is a big deal for ease of access to treatment. This may well kick it to standard of care. Leaves me gruntled (yes, that is a word 🙂 )

I agree with Dude you get more detailed info from the PACE-2 search. SBRT is as safe as the more common ‘standard of care’ EBRT and far more convenient with radiation delivered in five fractions rather than 20-45. So much more convenient. SBRT may actually have slightly better cancer control rates than EBRT. In my situation the actual cost was less as well due to fewer fractions. Most Dr.’s practice as they’ve been taught and the ‘system’ can be slow to adopt change (not including litigation issues around change).

Mayo Clinic mapped out my radiation plan. 45 treatments, delivered over 9 solid weeks.

Originally, it was possible I would have to lodge in Rochester, Minnesota, for those 9 weeks.

However, they released the plan to a local radiologist, and I juggled those 45 appointments, after teaching school all day.

Right or wrong, my radiologist believed this plan would result in less fatigue.
I trusted his expertise, and still do today.

To be sure, it was a long haul, getting through those 9 weeks, but the treatments I received continue to pay dividends.
