At a visit with my family doctor last week, I mention tenderness, swelling, and pain in my left breast. I was surprised when she ordered a mammogram, but I said "OK," and yesterday I had the procedure done.
The technicians were wonderful and kept the whole thing light hearted. They told me they do about half a dozen male mammograms per month. The procedure was identical to the way it would have been done on a woman, and the results were available almost immediately. They followed up with an ultrasound, the results of which were also available in 10 minutes. So, I left the hospital knowing the results. No cancer or suspicious growths were found. The report mentioned asymmetrical gynecomastia.
I wasn't very worried about the test, but I have seen some discussion about a link between prostate cancer and breast cancer, so there was that to think about.
I saw a statistic yesterday that claims one in 762 men will develop breast cancer. I have trouble believing that, but that's what I saw on the internet, so it must be true.
So...gynecomastia. At least the last technician, who was a lot of fun, actually, told me "Well, at least you have the cute, pert boobs."
It seems like cancer never really goes away. It just hides in the corner, biding its time.
