Blood in urine stream

Are you seeing a urologist? If not, that is next step. Do you have any other symptoms?

Urinary track infection and prostatitis are the usual culprits, my wife had similar issue last year with negative tests yet antibiotics seemed to fix it then it returned a month later. Cranberry juice and AZO products are usually good for symptoms.

Thank you both for replying. I will try to get a referral to a urologist. The only symptoms I have are urgency like having to urinate every 30 minutes on the occasional day and low grade bladder area pain. Hopefully that is enough to get a referral. I appreciate the Cranberry Juice and AZO suggestions. Not sure I can get AZO in Canada but I can get Cranberry Juice.

Lyme, if you are on traditional Medicare, you don’t need a referral. Just research in your area and call for an appointment.

Hi Lyme and welcome to our forum. With a large prostate and low PSA it is unlikely that your symptoms are prostate cancer related. As others have suggested, you should see a urologist ASAP since your PCP doesn't seem to have a clue. He or she will have a variety of options to help find the source and treat the issue.

Lyme, an enlarged prostate can cause blood in the urine by putting too much pressure on the urethra and possibly damaging it. Undetected kidney stones can also cause blood to occur. However BPH speaks to the urgency you are experiencing. There are treatments for BPH that can shrink the prostate and maybe alleviate your symptoms. So, seeing a urologist is not out of picture. Blood in semen is more alarming as noted in my signature.

Jack64 - I have blood in my semen as well. It just started at the same time as the blood in the urine. This is why my Doctor figured it is the large prostate. I will push for a referral.

I appreciate all the ideas. I am limited with what I can do in Canada. I need a referral to see a urologist, but I think I can see one if I explain my current symptoms to my doctor. At the time I saw him a few weeks ago I only had the blood in the urine and semen, now I have the bladder pain and urination issues. I will let you all know how it goes.

Thanks for your comments, they have given me the knowledge to know I need to push for further testing.

Lyme, many years ago , when I was in my 40's, I had blood in my semen, and urolgist told me it was likely just a broken blood vessel from a particularly intense orgasm. I suppose that could affect urine as well but I don't know.
not saying thats the case with you, just saying it was my experience.

ALL I CAN SAY, is if the Dr gives you a hard time about a referral to a urologist, (assuming you are in Canada, or at least not in the U.S.) I WOULD PUSH BACK VERY VERY HARD. This is an issue that needs to be addressed by a urologist not a primary care doctor.

Lyme, Personally, I'd see the Urologist first, and see what he has to say. With your PSA, and putting in the age factor, your likelyhood of having symptomatic PCa is really, really low.

More likely, you have BPH (old man prostate), and possibly something else going on to cause the blood.

Hip pain from metastatic disease doesn't show up unless you have serious, long term, even end stage PC. You're not there. You may need an MRI, but let's eliminate the other possibilities first.

As far as your comment "I don't know how you guys stay so calm" , trust me, we are not always calm. We get nervous around PSA testing time, and most of us, when we first started this journey, were out of our minds. You adjust to situations as they arise.

My terror level went from 10 to 5 from this statement alone. I don't even have a diagnosis yet and you guys are helping me out. Thanks ever so much.

Its almost impossible to see any specialist outside of the medical system as it is against the law. All medical care in Canada is free, but with any free system and the aging population it is getting over taxed. So sometimes you have to be a squeeky wheel but not too squeeky. Don't want to lose your doctor as 25% of the population does not have a doctor and have to go to emergency for treatment. Some things like MRI's you can get from private clinics for a fee around $2000.00. So if your really nervous and can scrape up the cash you can get an MRI practically immediately.

I am much calmer talking to you people who have so much experience in this area. I am sorry you are all here (meaning in this particular forum), but are thankful you are willing to give advise to someone who was very concerned over his symptoms, but feeling much better from your advise and wisdom.

While I have never liked "nothing burgers" I would gleefully eat one now and sing its praises.

Not really. What I mean by that is I take a lot of vitamins some of which have thinning properties like curcumin. From my name you can see I had Lyme Decease and it affected my heart and kidneys and gave me early arthritis. I have been stable for 40 years on my regimen of vitamins. But as I get older I get more symptoms just like all of us.

I have an appointment to see my Doctor this week, I will keep you guys posted.

Wow I have hematuria often and don't even question it.
Yes I've had kidney stones and I have had PCA plus radiation along with stricture and one time a paraphimosis so wow I am a bleeder.
If it lasts longer I see the urologist but it usually passes.
I'm also on blood thinners and that may play a role.
I'd even say it's kinda a good thing Bec I'm on TRT and that can lead to high iron level and other issues so losing some blood now and then is a good thing.
Yes I'm unusual but it's no longer something I worry about.

Urine flow test is easey peasey! Just pee into a funnel that measures flow.
CT with contrast might show a blockage which I had with a kidney stone. I guess it will show a tumor etc. as well.
I will say one more time-hematuria is not always a concern. I have blood almost daily and even clot's now and again. I have test after test and pretty much conclude that I am just a bleeder.
Large prostate radiation and blood thinners may be the culprit.
