Periodontal issues

1 year after Prostate Radiation treatment my dentist discovered an unusual number of cavities. 8 in one year. The dental tech mentioned that she thought they might be related to Radiation Therapy.
I had a DEXXA scan last year and the results showed "significantly elevated risk of osteoporosis-related fracture".
Has anyone else found they have started getting cavities after Prostate Radiation?

Are you still on Lupron/Abiterone? Since you had a DEXA scan I’m thinking your doctor may have you on Biphosphonates. Teeth and bone have some similarities but also differences. (Fun fact: 😄At least one dentist claims that Tooth Enamel is the 2nd hardest substance on Earth.) But, ADT or Biphosphonates or radiation should have no direct affect on your teeth. But the aforementioned Jaw Necrosis can have drastic effects on teeth. I did read that “Bisphosphonates can cause tooth decay as a side effect.” As for the 8 cavities I have to wonder if the ADT caused a sweet tooth for you or extra eating of some sort, which lead to the caries.

It reminds me of when I came home from the dentist in 7th grade. I had to report to my dad that I had 6 cavities. He was unhappy. But the worst part was getting them filled. Our family dentist didn’t use novacaine to fill caries. As an adult I can only marvel what a sadist he must have been.

I am currently undergoing replacement of another molar due to frequent gum infections caused by Xtandi. (They list that as a potential side effect). I had a bone graft 2 months back along with 2 'cut and scrape' surgeries from the same cause. Did have a bone break while on 2 & 1/2 years of Lupron so the docs gave me Prolia.

Curious because I'm having implants and one side came loose and he had to repack it with bone graft and reinsert it.
Hopefully it's going to hold. The left side is holding up and I need another implant and crown for two front teeth

Maybe radiation maybe not?
