9 years ago, 2015, a week after turning 57, I got the call.
Uro read the 12 core path report, 8 cores + for “Prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma” with one core graded 5 + 5. Dr. never said the word cancer until I asked him, you mean I have cancer? The Dr. stated yes and that he was going to do everything he could to keep me alive for 10 years. Great I said, die at retirement, 67.
I chose surgery, followed by radiation, final path G9, SV+, with no + nodes. PSA started to creep up to the point that I knew I needed a medical oncologist. Thanks to this forum, I began to see Dr. Oliver Sartor at Tulane in January 2021. Right from the start, Dr. Sartor’s plan called for monitoring PSA until it hit .5, then go for PSMA pet scan and hope for a cure with radiation again. In February, 2022, PSA rose above .5 and PSMA scan was done, which found 2 hot abdominal nodes which were radiated by Dr. Kendra Harris at the Tulane cancer center. I was on ADT for 6 months and my PSA went to nondetectable. Since the second round of radiation, I have followed with Dr. Sartor and he has monitored my PSA levels and PSA levels remain low/undetectable.
Dr. Sartor left Tulane last year, but he still monitors my PSA. Early August of this year I drove from the MS gulf coast to see Dr. Sartor at Mayo, as I had concerns about my PSA bouncing from low to undetectable. When Dr. Sartor walked into the exam room, it was like seeing an old friend. He spent an hour with me and told me he had no concerns and to continue with regular PSA testing. Dr. Sartor went on to say that if I was seeing him for the first time today, my treatment would be no different than what they gave me at Tulane. Dr. Sartor had good words to say about a 25+ year old study done and published by my surgeon, Dr. Charles Pound.
I am very thankful for Dr. Sartor, he is a great person and Doctor. Same is true for my Tulane radiation oncologist, Dr. Kendra Harris. I am thankful for this forum’s member who brought Dr.Sartor’s practice to my attention. I also thank my original Uro for finding the cancer and his recommendation of Dr. Pound Charles to do the surgery. Advances in fighting PC are happening every day and you guys keep the faith.
