What is the current rule of thumb for an increased in PSA

Hello community. I have a son-in-law that has family history of PCa. His PSA jumped in a year from 1 up to 1.7. The old rule of thumb was that with a family history of PCa and a Rate of Velocity (change) of greater than 20% in a year, one should be biopsied.

Is that still the case. I shared with him that was the recommendation 13 years ago when I was diagnosed.

Please let me know what the current research is suggesting.

Agree with halbert - Age is obviously important and one odd data point is meaningless in the PSA testing world. There are many possible causes of PSA variation and PCa is just one.

He can chat with his normal doctor about doing another PSA test in a month then maybe another in month depending on results. He could also start a relationship with a urologist given his family history but that may not be necessary quite yet. Really up to him if he wants to move to the next level of analysis based on one result.

Your SIL should prepare for the next PSA test by laying low for a couple of days before the test with no bike riding or sexual related activity. There are many things that can affect PSA so one needs to eliminate as many factors as possible for comparable results.
