Simple cystoscopy for urine retention

I know some of you have had this experience and I have heard some bad experiences. Having had RA as a primary treatment my Uro thought a cystoscopy just to see what was happening was warranted. After being cleaned up and prepped, the RA injected lidocaine into the urethra and few minutes later the Uro came in and started the procedure. I felt nothing but a sensation of a thin worm moving in. It was painless. He saw slight scaring of the bladder and that the prostate was toast. That caused a slight tightening around the urethra, but he said that there was nothing to be concerned about. The whole procedure lasted about five minutes. The procedure was totally painless. I do know that other more complex procedures to fix problems are lengthier and could cause more discomfort. He prescribed Tamsulosin for the retention. So far after RA and ADT, there has been no serious side effects. Also, I was wide awake for the procedure.

Go bucks, I don’t know your situation, but you can ask your Uro for a Valium for the nerves. I do know that more extensive exams usually require twilight or general anesthesia. I made the mistake of not taking a Valium when having my vasectomy. The doctor asked if I wanted a prescription before I came in and I declined as he said he would numb the area. As he started the procedure he stated that I would feel some slight pressure six times. As I grunted through the first time, I asked if it was too late for the pill? He laughed and replied, yes.. I didn’t laugh at all, during the next five ”Some slight pressure” times.

Jack, I have no issues and nothing scheduled. Just a general fear of the thing. I don't like MRI's either so I'm all too familiar with valium. Thanks.

I've had 1 prostate biopsy and 15 cystoscopies ( had/have? bladder cancer too). The biopsy procedure discomfort is much greater. Cystoscopies are, in fact, not as bad as people think they are.

Thanks for that. I've read so many horror stories about cystoscopies, I refused to have one for a potential AUS implant a couple of years ago. Just couldn't do it. Biopsies though have been no problem and no pain. I think the only way I would consent to a cysto is with general anesthesia and I don't think that's even offered. Valium, for me at least, is like aspirin.
