ok need help motivating my brother to go get the lumps checked out

His girlfriend let it slip that he has growths.   I told her to tazar him and take him to the doc to get it checked out immediately.

While he is still young (23) and it might be nothing.  

But we all know that cancer can strike at any age.

What did it take for you all to get checked out?

Hi Navy,
For his age group testicular cancer is far more prevalent. Age 35 is his calling for prostate cancer testing because of family history. For me, I was tested randomly by my provider. I was well below the testing age ranges at the time at age 44. I know of only one recorded case at your brothers age...

it took an act of God to get me checked out. left to my own devices i'd be a dead man.

Hi MMNAVY,
I would keep on his back for a while in consultation with his girlfriend. He will hate it, but I think younger men are perhaps (I could be wrong) a little more compliant. Can she get him to a checkup for something else (fitness/complete physical for something else)? Testicular lumps and skin need to be assessed. Scary things, but in the absence of being actually able to make him do anything (which is impossible), you need to keep up the pressure (or she does) I think, as I think the only thing in this young man's case will be relentless nagging from you both. He may just do it to get you off his back... maybe?? If it is nothing too serious who cares about his reaction (sticks and stones!), but if it needs treatment or assessment of any kind, you could indeed save his life. The other thing that just occurred to me if that maybe you could find his best mate and just lay your concerns on the table with him, and ask him to speak to him? - Your brother may then comply with a checkup reuqest if it came from a supportive male about his age? I only got checked because my company canceled our group life insurance and went with a different company. MetLife required a blood test. Absolutely ridiculous. I am in perfect health, no aches or pains, perfect BMI. A test is a complete waste of time... When the results came back PSA 17 I changed my tune. I figure they saved my life. Thank you MetLife.
(On the other hand, now they won't insure me.)

I started PSA tests exactly at age 50, during my yearly exam, just because my GP said that was the normal thing to do at age 50.

Wait! We are using the wrong tactics. He is a young guy right? His girlfriend should say she is worried about her health and will not have sex with him until he gets check out. She does not want to catch anything. He'll do it the next day! ;-)

I agree with Steve...are these growths on your brother's testicles? PCa is unlikely at his age but, as already stated, there are no hard and fast rules with this or any cancer.

Fortunately for my husband, his regular MD had been charting his PSA every year for many years. In fact, when told to go the urologist to get checked out, my husband was given a graph that charted his PSA for the past 7 or so years illustrating a mild but upward trend over time. In addition, he gave John a print out of his latest blood test showing PSA and % free PSA which was below the normal threshold.

I think Jeff may have the right asnwser to this sitatuion if you stop and think when you were at that age what did you think about sex and work the work part may have change a litte bit but the other stays the same just look at teenage preganices my personal feeling get him check out quickely!!!!!!!!!!!!idea

Jeff you are on target. What a man will do for that stuff!!!!! Just look at what we do! We even stick a needle in Mr Happyl for us to be able to play!

Thanks everyone I really appreciate the ideas.  He knows that Lance Armstrong was dx at 25.
But I have a feeling it has more to do with watching our mother die of cancer and see me going thru chronic illness and taking years of light chemo's.

Lance Armstrong had testicular cancer. As I mentioned earlier there is a high prevalence of this type of cancer in young men. Prostate cancer is typically found later in life. The average age of diagnosis for testicular cancer is 24 years old, and the average age of prostate cancer is 64. Of course that didn't help me much. I was diagnosed at 44 with prostate cancer. Nough said though, You are certainly looking after loved ones and that is what's most important. I wish someone had talked about screening to me when I was you brothers age.

My first run-in was skin cancer in a spot I couldn't see on my back - got it looked at because I was tired of paying extra to get the blood out of the shirts at the cleaner.
PSA was because the nurse noticed there wasn't one one file, and I knew I would blow the deductible anyway, so why not?
Always said - the doctor is for birthing you and doing the autopsy, not to be seen in between. Seems I was wrong.
