30 Months with AMS Implants...

I formerly visited this forum just to see what's going on.  I've even posted a few times, but not like I did in the past.

In July, 2008 (After I suffered with severe incontinence & ED, following removal of my prostate and after 18 months of no improvement), I received the AMS 800 Artificial Urinary Sphincter (success story) & the AMS 700 CX Inflatable Penile Prosthesis.  My surgeon was Dr. Alan Morey at UT Southwestern here in Dallas.  I kept receiving requests on this forum for updates. Finally, a member posted some questions and I attempted to answer them.  I have some new, encouraging results, so I am pasting the former Q & A's below and adding some updates.   

How good is the IPP implant erection? 

The erections after implant are good and very usable.  In my opinion, mine is not quite as good as before prostate removal, due mainly to the 3/4 of an inch shortening I experienced.  But it certainly beats no erection.  The wife and I are now experiencing very, very good intamacy again, with good orgasms.  It is different... but good.

Do you still feel the same sensations?

I was not as sensitive as pre-prostate removal, but have now gained regained nearly full sensitivity.

Is it obvious that there is something artificial in there to you and your partner?

It's obvious to me because I know it as a fact.   There is some extra "hardware" in the scrotum, but it is not readily noticable.  My wife says firmness is restored whereas in the past, I had indeed lost some rigidness.  I think us older guys naturally lose some of it.

Can you ride a bicycle with one of these implants.

Yes; after the doctor releases you to do so.  I ride with no problems.

What do you look like in the locker room when its not inflated? 

Flacid, I look larger than my former flacid state.  This is due to the fact that implants do not usually recede up into the body as before implant.  Neither does the penis shrink as much as it did pre-surgery flacid.  So this means the flacid "look" is noticably larger.  This subject is discussed regularly on a Yahoo site devoted to penile implants.  It's the general opinion there that guys who receive the implant fall into two cartegories: Growers and Showers.  Growers expand very noticably when inflated.  Showers look fairly large even before inflation and do not gain as much length during inflation.  If that is so, I am a "shower". 

Is it true that you will lose some length in the penis after implant?

I did.  I lost about 3/4's of an inch.  It seems most do lose some.  But I gained in girth, which is characteristic of the CX.  The AMS 700 LGX is supposed to expand length a little.  The loss of length is unconsequential to pleasure neither to me or to my wife.

Update: I recently was very surprised to notice what looked like a pre-surgery/implant size when it was inflated.  So, after a long, long time of not paying any attentionit, and thinking I'd never recover that former enviable size, and why did it matter as long as I could have sweet relations with my wife, which I do, I discovered that, inflated, I have regained my old size!!  I didn't expect it.  I've not heard any other implantees say the same thing.  But it really does now inflate to my old size.  I cannot say I am unhappy about that!

So, to those who still suffer with ed and have lost hope... I hope I have been a help.

Gene, great to hear from you. I'm really glad to see your life is progressing healthily and still making improvements. Don't be a stranger.

Gene, I am now in the dual implant club but I can only docuement a three day trip so far having this done tueday. I want to thank you and the others who told their story which brought me to this point, well thanks not so much right now as my scrotum is like an orange with ouchy things in it. So far I think the AUS pain is the worst but it is sorta hard to tell when one pain stops and the other starts. Glad to hear you are still happy and one day not too soon I will be too.

Salty, being "completely dry", I take it to mean you don't even drip every now & then... which would indeed be exceptional on the AUS.  I wear one thin pantiliner per day to catch my seldom "drips".  That's a far cry from changing out my heavy pads every 2 hours, which is what I did over 30 months ago.  I am proud for you.  And... you never know how long you, I, or anyone else will live.  That's really why it's important to be prepared spiritually by knowing Him.  I'm really glad you are doing well with both implants.

Dr. Morey has patients come from "all over".  He's a good surgeon, having served as a surgeon reconstructing injured soldiers.

Knotreel, may you continue down the same road of healling I (and Salty) have had.

Post re your IPP (Inflatable Penile Prosthesis).

I underwent the Coloplast Titan Penile Implant Procerdure in December 2007 after developing ED Post-Prostatectomy in 2004. 

My Surgeon was Dr. Hossein Sadeghi-Nejad at Hackensack University

Medical Center in NJ.

The Titan completey corrected my ED and restored my sex life and the emotional bond with my wife.

Also, Coloplast offers a Lifetime Replacement Guarantee on the

Titan Implant. I believe that AMS does the same for their IPP.

Gene, thanks for sharing your story --- it will be very helpful to men who are considering an IPP to correct their ED.

In case Gene doesn't check in, I'll answer on the basis I my experience, I am now two years with my AMS 700LGX. When I went for my first followup which was about two weeks post op the walls of scrotum were still very thick but soreness was mostly gone. At that point I could not operate the unit due to the swelling. The doctor did a few pumps then deflated it and this was not painful ( others have reported excruciating pain during this first visit). A week or two after that visit I started pumping it up some but not to anywhere near full inflation. By the six week doctor visit I was beginning to fully pump, or as you will find later, fully inflating is a moving target, note that it took Gene a really long time to regain his post op length. about sex, I did not want to try it till about a month after the six week visit, although I could inflate it more than sufficient, there still was some pain with the tissue that was  stretching back out, or perhaps scar tissue? Anyway, after the six week visit, as per their instructions, I began inflating daily trying to reach the goal of one hour at full inflation, this took maybe two months to do. I continued this for the first year and well before the year was up, it all became very comfortable and no pain till about and hour, all the while I was regaining length ,as Gene did. So unless you are very motivated and can work with pain, sex may not be that enjoyable until some time has gone by. So, be patient, your new equipment needs a "break-in" period that they don't tell you about in the show room. Mine is very comfortable and besides the obvious, the implant is helpful in adjusting your size to fit your clothing.

Was hoping that Gene214 or Salty-dark could respond. My surgery is going to be performed by their Surgeon as well. But, realizing that the their post were somewhat older it is understandable.

Scheduled for a AMS 700LGX in April, and hoping for a great result.

I just noticed I had my prostrate removed (gleason 7) 10 years ago. Shortly after massive dosages of Viagra and Cilalis no erection. Doctor moved me to a compounded mixture to be injected into my penis just prior to intercourse (oww) and still nothing.

I had an AMS 700 CXM implanted successfully but lost 1 1/2 inches in length. Well 10 years later the length has not increased. Doctor told me to lose weight (I was not and still am not needing to lose weight.)

Device inflates OK with one hand but need two for total inflation. (keep fingernails short for deflation or you will regret it.)

Orgasms are great and many times follows with a second one with in 30 seconds.

I want to increase the length and posting if anyone has solved this problem.

Sounds like you had it rougher than I. I had 3 surgery's after the prostrate removal one to stop leakage at the urethra re-attachment, the second because it was preventing urination, and the third to loosen it up a bit. All this was before the implant. After the implant (10 years) I still have to wear a guard for occasional leaks like straining to do something and always after putting my penis back into my pants.

I wonder if the earlier 3 surgery's were when the urethra became shorter.

I haven't heard of the AMS 800 or the Trimex. I will look into those.

Thanks! I'll look into those ideas you mentioned.

Also, just to let any posters know, my doctor knew he had to remove one of the two nerves needed for erection as the cancer might have spread to that one. He arranged for a plastic surgeon remove a nerve from my right foot and had it grafted to replace the one he removed. This was all done during the prostrate surgery. Guess it failed!

I had the surgery 10 years ago. I think the nerve replacement should have made a difference by now. Thanks for you comment.

Ok I’m new here ,in Dec 9 2019 I had a AMS 700 LRG put in my penis I was 71 yrs old , my Dr didn’t do it right it’s not far enough to the head of my penis plus the pump bulb is to high in my Sack it’s hard to pump and with the implant not being far enough into the head of my penis it folds over trying to insert it ,I was referred to another Specialist one look from him he told me it was wrong and needed to be redone the first one took over 6 weeks to recover ,now with Covid here I’m putting the next one off I don’t one to be in a hospital with that plus I’m filing a malpratice law suit against to first Dr I wish he had told me he was new at this kind of surgery he screwed up my life being 72 now I may never get to use it plus some nerves were cut and I have been depressed and taking meds ,I hope on one else has problems like mine.

Thanks for the welcome I didn’t have Prostate cancer thank God ,I did have bad ED I couldn’t maintain and Erection that’s why I chose in AMS 700 implant where I live we have two Doctors one stopped doing them cause it take a long time in surgery the other one at one time was his partner but broke away and started his own practice I was in his office when I first seen a picture of a implant , so I talked to him about the Implant. He never said how many he had done, it’s my fault for not asking him so I set mine up being 71 at the time Medicare paid for it all but 400.00 this Dr has 2 offices one here in Clarksville,Tn the other in Spring Field Tn at North Crest Hospital it was to be done 12/9/2019 I was under for 3 1/2 hours and stayed over night the next morning Dr D as he is known partner came in my room and said to me he wanted to see the mess that Dr D had done my wife was there and heard his comments, after surgery I only seen him one time after surgery so I fired him and when to see the other Dr that used to do Implants after that visit he send me to see a Specialist in Nashville,Tn Dr Knowls, I had a appointment on April,1, but That’s when Covid hit us and all Drs cancelled in per appointments ,I was finally able to see him in July , very nice Dr he looked at me and said it was put in wrong and needed to be replaced and need to be sercomsized sorry about my spelling Cause it didn’t go far enough into the Penis Head and it would not be ridgit enough for sex cause the tip would fold over plus the little pump is to high in my Sack it’s suppose to be lower to the bottom so this Dr D screwed up my life , in Sept I hired a lawyer to file a Malpratice law suit against Dr D but up to now that lawyer hasn’t done anything the other Drs office here got a letter from Dr Knowls office telling him what needed to be done, Yesterday we fired the first Lawyer in my Town it hard to fine a lawyer to do anything so we have more information that my first lawyer has or tried to get.
I hope AMS manufacturers finds this out cause they were suppose to have a rep there while Dr D was doing my Implant I don’t think they did thei Dr should never be allowed to do this to anybody else I put off my next replacement cause of Covid I don’t want to be in a hospital, but the way it looks who know when I can do it again sorry for the long letter and my typing .
