A Scare at 2 1/4 Years

I am now 2 1/4 years post surgery. Two weeks ago I went in for my regular blood draw and last Friday I saw my doctor. Usually the PSA results arrive in the mail before my appointment and this time they hadn't. The doctor told me that my PSA -- formerly straight 0.00 had come back at 0.01. He said that he didn't send the result because he wanted to be with me to answer questions when I found out.

To cut to the chase, he did another blood sample and this week I got the word (a phone call) that the result was 0.00. Whew! Able to start breathing again. If you are an optimist you would say an error was made and if you are a pessimist you would average the readings and give me a 0.005. Anyway, my doctor is of the opinion that it was a lab error and given that he sees thousands of results I'll take his judgment.

I wanted to report this just so anyone who is in a similar situation can take some comfort from it.

I think I'm beginning to dislike these super-sensitive PSA readings.  0.01 sounds like a very good number, and 0.00 sounds like an impossibility.  I didnt think it was even possible to get a reading of 0.00.  I guess I was wrong about that. 

In any case, I'm glad your number is back where you want it, and I hope it stays that way forever.  Congratulations.  I never thought I would be so fond of the number "zero."

that's my kind of doctor!  i'm so glad that your zero streak is intact.  our numbers are similar except  i'm just beginning in follow-up PSA tests.  in fact i think i will have blood drawn today for next week's doctor visit .

That is great news. I know I would get excited too. I am getting my PSA tested every 6 months. My lab does not report 0.00. The lowest they write is <0.01 and if mine ever changes from <0.01 I already have the signed lab request form to do it again if and when I choose. The report automatically comes to my home and I can retrieve the number on line.
