Painful Thighs after Radical Prostatectomy

Hi everyone

Radical Prostatectomy 31st October 2011. Surgeon confirmed Gleeson 3+4, 20% contained cancer but no spread.

Cathetera out 13th November but three weeks quite severe UTI.

After eight weeks got behind the wheel of a car but after a couple of journeys now have chronic thighs aching (both). Have had a couple of blood losses (cleared up quickly) but internal wound has taken time to heal.

Consultant happy with progress after 6 weeks but said there will be some problems as its still a major operation.

Have managed to do some walking but rectal pain was a real problem for a while. This has now subsided but thigh pain (upper) is quite severe.

Any ideas?

Sorry you have the pains but hopefully they will subside over additional time.

Good luck to you ahead, as you continue to recover.

- have you considered stool softeners for the rectal pain - sometimes due to the size of the prostate that is removed - a curve/bump can occur in the rectal wall.

-there can also have temporary lymphedema that can cause swelling and difficulty and moving thighs/legs.

Thanks for your replies.

I have had bad New Year. I have had to have the Emergency Doctor out twice and its a very severe water infection that is causing the problem.

This is the third time I have had an infection but nothing like the other two. I could not stand the pain was so severe.

Lets hope the antibiotics work. Just to be sure I have two different one so I will take 7 days of one and seven days of another

MERALGIA PARESTHETICA is caused by a trapped nerve in the groin causing pain classically on the side of the thigh, but also sometimes the front of the thigh.

What is numb thigh?
Numb thigh is caused when sensation in the thigh is diminished from nerve damage or dysfunction. It can result from an injury to the thigh or exposure to cold temperatures. Another possible cause of numb thigh is meralgia paresthetica, which is a disorder caused by compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, one of the main nerves within the thigh. Numbness in the thigh or legs can also be caused by a number of chronic conditions that affect the nerves, such as multiple sclerosis and lupus.

My upper right thigh gets numb when I sit certain ways.... The darn dentist chaiir is one of them...

A urinary tract infection can easily be a 10 pain on a scale of 10. I leaked badly for months after DaVinci surgery, and controlling the leaks with pads may have actually contributed to the several UTIs that I had. If you are still on pads, be sure to change them when they are wet. Don't try to get any extra "mileage" out of one.

I've not heard of them (UTIs) contributing to leg pains, but I can imagine that if you have constant pain you would tend to move differently, which could cause strain in other places.

And yes, Bronson's mention of stool softeners is important. You may want to continue those just out of general principle if your doctor agrees.

HI! my husband had radical prostatectomy 2.5 months and he now experiences thighs pain...Had anyone experience similar issues?6 weeks after surgery, PSA =0.03 thank you!
