The Power of Hope

Perhaps more powerful than any visualization or other specific technique you can use to alter the inner environment of your body are feelings of hope and love. I consider it my job as a doctor to give my patients both, because that’s what they need to be able to live. Since I don’t know what the outcome will be for any individual, no matter what the pathology report says, I can in all honesty give everyone hope.


I offer the doctors in my audiences a standing bet of a year’s salary. I will read a pathology report, and if they can guess the date of that person’s death within six months they get my salary, but if not I get theirs. Even though they have a total of twelve months leeway, I’ve yet to find anyone willing to take me up on my offer. When I challenge them, they say they can’t tell from a pathology report when a person will die. Then how can they use path reports to sentence people, as so many of them regularly do? You can’t tell the future from a pathology report, and anyone who says otherwise is wrong. There are differences between probabilities and possibilities.

I used to sit in my office wondering why I was spending all my hours with people who had diseases they couldn’t get over. But some of them did get over their diseases, and wrote me letters years later saying “Thank you for giving me the option to survive. I did.”

So now it’s easy for me to pass that option on to others, people with AIDS, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It doesn’t matter what the disease is. There’s always room for hope. I’ m not going to die because of statistics. I hope you won’t either.

Good post Bud.....I have some hope and optimism, but not the same doseage, I can see a few cases of PCa patients whom were in high risk scenarios whom appear to have either beaten this beast or done ultra superiorly, comparatively. That would be Dr. Fred Lee, Dr. Myers and Ralph V. (forum member herein). Also, seen plenty of patients try about everything available and could not prevail, but put up valiant fights , in so trying. Do you or anyone else herein have examples of patients whom are BCR failures with higher rising psa levels or ultra low aggressive Psa's and disease progressions, whom have later beaten this disease or have extreme looking successes??? I would like to know more about any such patients and what they might have done in their fight on this. I'm talking about guys whom failed all typical treatments, including SRT radiations and yet in the face of esculating disease, somehow reversed it to cure or incredible stability or appearing like cured.

It might even be that some guy will go way outside the box of known therapies and find something extremely useful or better. A huge kudos to anyone whom is the little train that could and finds any twilight zone answers for cancer patients of any type.

I use the hope word often. I tell others, constantly, to never give up hope. I am all about the "hope" word.

What might be impossible today, may be fixed tommorow. Every new day, is another chance for hope to be realized into something positive.

One reason I am not a "fretter" or "worrier", is because those modes do nothing at all, and serve no purpose.

As a 4 time survivor (so far) of dangerous cancers just in the past 12 years, I live for hope.

Good topic in my opinion.

There is always hope and there is still life left to live.

I always go with the hopeful side.

Let me say this. "I hope" and "IHOP" are dysfunctional neighbors.
When your confidence in your well researched treatment plan hits a low spot, you find yourself in the "I hope" camp.
On those days when PCa has an absolute strangle hold on you,
blueberry pancakes can rock your world.

Although not a book about PC, Flawless Execution by Jim Murphy, an F15 pilot and CEO of an organization called Afterburner which implements fighter pilot strategies into corporations and sports teams (New York Giants). In the book, Jim shares a pilot strategy called "future picture" in which the pilot pictures every scenario possible even before entering the cockpit and flies the aircraft threw those scearios in his mind over and over again. Even after you do this there are no guarantees of no surprises, but it helps. I've also heard that great athletes use this strategy to win games. Former POWs that have built their homes in their minds are living in them today because of faith, hope, future picture. FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!

Raddad, my most gooderest bestus buddy, a post like this and so many of your other posts are so GFMPH. You give hope to so many in here that otherwise had no hope. That's why we all LOVE you. You are not just a cancer warrior you are our head cheerleader in the fight.
