will this make me feel better about it or not?

Just got back from my doctor. I've been having some unrelated health issues so I've been doing a ton of tests.

Today I found out I have two genetic mutations and one of them has been known to have a link to cardio vascular disease and cancer. My doctor looked t me and said " I wasn't ever comfortable with you getting it at 40 but I think this explains it.

I don't want to post too much personal medical info but if you need more info on this, for whatever reason, feel free to ask the admin for my email. Maybe he can provide it.

This is important to me because, although water under the bridge, not a day has gone by where I don't ask myself how this could have happened or what I did to deserve it. I'm also somewhat relieved that it is probably a genetic issue. However, I don't discount other environmental factors contributing or enhancing my chances such as smoking, drinking, toxins etc.

Ok, that email bounced, so it isn't working, but it may still be revealing stuff you don't want public...

i thought about why me and why i got cancer....for about five minutes and decided it really didn't matter.  i'd rather concentrate on the things i can change rather than the ones i have no control over.

David, I also tested positive for a genetic mutation (BRCA2). See my other thread about this for more detail.

I know exactly how you feel. I walked away saying, "I certainly made everything worse by my poor nutrition choices and unhealthy life style, but the genetic mutation made me feel a little less guilty about it."

Who knows if that's the right attitude, but moving forward we're starting from right where we stand. We can't do otherwise.

DavidG, these thoughts come to mind in reading your recent posts.  I hope you find  "the serenity to accept the things you cannot change; courage to change the things you can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time."

I have no religious intent here, just a sincere desire that you find peace of mind.  Given your young age, I hope you find some way to lower your anxiety level about PCa and your various other health concerns.

Having fought and surived 4 serious and dangerous cancer bouts in 12 years, I don't even ask the question, why? There is no one answer, no doctor of mine will even guess why some people end up being cancer magnets and others dont. I don't even drink or smoke, for starters, and come from a family where cancers are virtually unknown.

I was exposed to a lot of dangerous toxins in my distant past, like in my early 20's. It may or may not have been the reason for all my cancers.

I just look at it as being providential, and you simply have to deal with the cards that life deals you. Been too busy on the surviving part, to sit around and ponder the great "why" question. None of it has been fair, but then no one said life was ever fair.

Both my grandfathers died of cancer. Both my parents also. Both were only 45 years old. I figured I was on borrowed time when I was DX'd at 51. meh...

I made the appointment with the hematologist for my genetic mutation as it may apply to future blood clotting and other issues. The place is a well known Hematology and Oncology practice. The know I had PCa and said to me "oh we treat cancer too". I told them I was already treated for cancer and that the purpose of my visit is to investigate possible arterial disease and venous thrombosis, not to revisit my cancer which I am trying to put behind me for my own mental sake. I fear that I am possibly opening a can of worms with this visit and wondering if I'm approaching it incorrectly.

Your doctor wasn't comfortable with you getting cancer! Did you ask him if he knew how you felt?  LOL

I think prostate cancer is a different animal as far as age goes.  I think if you pulled men off the street at any age above 30 and biopsied them, they would find it in a bunch of men with normal PSAs.

As soon as I had enough data to calculate my PSA doubling time (139 days) I worked backwards to try and calculate the date my PSA moved from 0.8 (a reasonable average value for a "normal" 56 year old) and started its climb.
I wanted to see if around that date i was using chemicals or if there was one event like radiation in the lab or something that could have triggered it. Nothing came to mind. Oh well.

I'm sure I ate a hamburger on that date plus or minus two months. Maybe that was it.

WG, were you doing any wild animal vet work around that time. Maybe a check on the chem sheet from DuPont products would shine some light? Maybe one sniff if the wind was from the wrong direction... devil

fascinating. I never heard of this before. I've always wondered why I have gotten cancer twice by 42. Maybe I should be tested?

test for the MTHFR DNA mutation next time you have blood work.

You can guess what I've nicknamed this mutation.
