Update:

This game on September 7th, will be the 2nd game of Clemson's 2013 Football Season, and it is for sure, against NC State. If I remember, Clemson always beats them, not a high ranked team by any means.

But since I have never been to any college game before, should still be exciting. Still hoping to go to the Patriots vs. Panther NFL game in November, even though I have been a faithful Pat's fan for 43 years, never had the chance to go to a game. This one will be in Charlotte, so it's do-able for us.

Hi David! Not sure how I ended up on the PC forum, but I did and then I noticed your post. Congrats!! I'm sure you'll do great. I dreaded having to take Speech I when I went back to college several years ago, but I did learn a few things and I ended up not doing half-bad when I had to give my first speech. They taught us to do an 'outline' of our speech first. On index cards, list the main points you want to make on separate cards - then under each, bullet point a few short sentences to explain. I was surprised at how much easier it was to give my speech in this way, rather than from a 'letter-type' format. Well, I'm sure you didn't need my advice as you've done this before - just thought I'd share something that worked for someone who was terrified of giving a speech (it was on domestic violence - and I got an A). Again, Congratulations on this honor David - you'll do great. And have fun at the game!

jim, more than you would believe. the afternoon I got the call, I was in my 3rd day of heavy mental funk, which is unusual for me. there are some really dark and dank places in my mind, but I work hard to stay out those places, but being mere flesh like the rest of us, I sometimes drift there - and its so depressing and empty, and serves no purpose excepting to take some of the fight out of me.

so getting some good news out of the clear blue was uplifting. I was going to ditch the call, since I didn't recognize the number (typical for me), but thought it might be my new doctor with an appointment change. glad I answered the phone.

and yes, while I am doing this for me, I most certainly am doing this for every single person here at HW PC, I think when any of us gets a chance, an honor, award, etc, it belongs to each of us.

Sephie, just a slight correction....the Sept. 7 games is vs. South Carolina STATE University. Hence, I am guessing the possible confusion with North Carolina State. Clemson should be a huge favorite against this team.

What a great opportunity! You will be fine with the speech. Since you are a writer, it might be advantageous to do what I do. (it works great for me). I script first, then do a couple of dry runs, after I am satisfied with everything I go back and use the script to make my bullet points. After that is done another dry run or two I am finished. It does work well. You'll do great.

I must be missing some posts here that I am not seeing.

I checked my notes on the original phone call, the woman clearly said NC State. The next day ,she sent me an email also stating NC State on September 7th. However, from the Clemson Tiger web site, they say it's SC State. SC is a small famous African American college in Orangeburg, SC. It was the site of the Orangeburg Massacre, in 1968, when 3 people were shot dead, during the terrible Civil Rights period of our country's history.

The important part of this thread, wasn't who Clemson was playing. The marketing department of the hospital systems doesn't care about that part. Neither do I. I have never been to a college game before, and don't even follow our local teams. The big rivalry here is the annual game between Clemson and the USC (University of SC) Gamecocks. Been going on for over 100 years, huge game.

The real point of the thread was about them picking me to honor, which still shocks me. I am certain we will have a good time with this event, regardless. I have to hope to have a "normal" chronic pain day that day, and not a "severe" pain day, in which case it would hard for me to be comfortable for that long a period of time.

I can only guess the marketing person got it wrong by one letter in the alphabet, the difference between North and South. They should have used a "S" instead of a "N".

Clemson should have no problem slaughtering such an unranked team.

ken, thanks for your tips. first thing I have to find out, is how long do I have to speak, I doubt more than 2-3 minutes tops at the game. now at the radio interview, it might be longer. should be getting details any day now.

I took a college class so many years ago, about giving speeches without notes. Over the years, when I have spoken publically, mostly technical talks, a few political, plus some religious ones. I would do so either without any notes, or what I could put on a 3x5 index card - on it, was just simple bullet points in case my mind went blank. Though that has never happened to me before.

While I easily see what the hospital system is up to with this marketing venture, I also am aware, that those rabid fans will be biting at the bullet for the game to start.

was already wondering if there was anyway to plug HW into this scheme. I may write to Peter and ask if there is anyway, which he would be agreeable with, and wouldn't put him at risk.

but on the other hand, the hospital system may have dress plans for me of their own, after all, its their promotion dime, and I am suppose to be representing them for sure.

I don't mind doing so, because they have been the hospital system of my choice the entire time I have lived here, having had at least 11 operations there between all my cancer events, plus having spent over 3 years total going through their oncology rehab program with all my cancer bouts.

They consistently win the "best patient care" in the state, year after year. And recently, the very hospital I go to, Downtown St. Francis, was on the list of safest hospital to be at in the entire state. So I am helping plug them as an honest and happy consumer/patient.

If I didn't believe in them, I wouldn't have any interest in endorsing them.

Speaking on youth day will be an exciting experience. My daughter is a professor at UNC and I was visiting Chapel Hill one youth day for the men's basketball game. It seemed the entire town was swarmed by families wearing Carolina blue. Everyone brings even the littlest children so they get introduced to the right team at a young age. I hope your message is well received. Perhaps keep is short for their attention span and the topic.

I've been away from the computer for a few days so I missed this great news.  Congratulations!  You are the perfect person to speak about PC Awareness.  I especially like Casey's and 81Guy's advice.  Short sentences with compelling content usually drive the point home effectively.  Happy to hear you will be speaking BEFORE the game rather than at halftime or at the end when Clemson will undoubtedly be way ahead and half the fans will have left.  Make sure you do some scouting for the Pats.  Look closely at the Clemson seniors and send your report to Coach B.  Enjoy this tremendous honor!  You certainly deserve it.

Congratulations, David.  I think you may find it easier to talk to a football stadium full of people than to a small group in close quarters.  You'll do great.  Enjoy your special day.

Clock, probably true, with a massive stadium filled with people, sure the crowd will just be but a blur, as opposed to seeing whom I am speaking to up close. It is something special and unexpected in an otherwise dreary day by day existence right now.

Is Ron a football fan? Don't think I have ever asked before.

I honestly have never followed college football, I like the big stuff, the NFL, and being a 40 year fan of the New England Patriots keeps me busy.

Clemson is a good team, based on their long time record. And boy, since I only live 18 miles or less from Death Valley, I am in the middle of Clemson Country. You don't dare speak an ill word about them around here, lol. Everything in the stores is Clemson Orange or tiger paw prints or both.

Even my wife has her "Clemson Mom" sticker on the back of her truck. Our oldest son, will graduate next May from Clemson with his Engineering Degree at age 36, a huge accomplishment.

Hope Ron has a decent weekend, and you too.

Is Ron a football fan?  yeah   You bet; however, he's not a Lions fan but rather roots for the Green Bay Packers.  He likes the college teams a bit better.  Then, there's the Detroit Tigers.  WOW!  Oh, and he loves hockey, too.  I don't know if any of the others guys or gals like sports - but Ron sure does!  In our living room, there are two televisions set up side by side.  Sports has helped him in his recovery from the various illnesses and diseases.

So while he's watching the various sports on TV, I am here on the computer.  We do watch movies together, but he'll have some sports on the smaller TV set.  LOL!  He's been in the hospital a lot these past three years, but today his pain level is around 5-6.  David, I know you wish for that lower level of pain.  We wish it would cease for you!  I do pray for you as I pray for my brother who has follicular lymphomia non-Hodgkin cancer.  What a monster it is.

Like Ron, I use sports for distraction, especially during NFL season. Not much for watching baseball, too slow for me, even though a lifetime Red Sox fan. Never got into hockey or basketball.

I use to be big time with Formula One racing, and Moto GP (motorcycle) Racing, but haven't really watched much the past 2-3 years.

I just came out of a terrible 3-day super pain streak, yesterday (Friday) spent hours with level 8 pain in both legs and feet, from the waist down mostly. Couldn't hardly stand up and every step was sheer agony. I see the new doctor late next week, hopefully for the nerve related tests, and then my oncologist the following week. I won't like, this constant pain is taking the fight out of me, I really don't care about the rest of my situation, i.e. PC side, with so much hurting. Lately, I have even had nightmares about being in painful and torture situations. Guess its my brains way of dealing with all this pain all the time, got to be relieved somehow.

I am already worried about that, have no idea how I will feel and what kind of day(s) I will be having on September 7th. I truly live right now, one day at the time.

Planning on not going anywhere today, no stores, nothing, and try to stay off my feet as much as I can.
Yesterday I had to mow, was so out of hand from the endless rains this summer, and even though I have a small riding tractor, while that keeps me from standing, the constant pounding of the tractor does almost as much damage to me, small tractors have zero suspension.

This may be my last year of mowing myself, we may see if we can afford to sub it out next season, and that will be one more thing that I won't be able to do for myself. The list keeps getting longer and longer.
