While cleaning my desk

I was trying to write my weekly blog post and resorted to trying and clean my desk instead. While moving papers around I found this certificate and thought I'd share it. It reads:

"The Cancer Treatment Center
Department of Radiation Oncology
Certifies That
Andrew
has successfully completed the prescribed course of Radiation Therapy with a high order of proficiency in the Art of being cheerful, outstanding in high courage, tolerant and determined in all orders given. It is recognized by our staff as an Honorable Achievement and we would like to congratulate you, on a job well done."

Not bad for six weeks of lying on my back.

For today my message to you is simple, be grateful for the life you have, for the joy in your heart and for the strength that keeps you coming back everyday to carry on with the business of enjoying life.

Ha! -- congrats on cleaning your desk. I may try it sometime. I remember getting my "graduation" certificate from the radiation team after my SRT was complete. I also remember a sincere hug from one of my--and I admit my favorite--radiation techs, both of us knowing that she can't afford not to move on from each of the patients who have passed through her care in the course of her 20-some years in the business. It's not easy for us, the patients. It's not easy for all of them on the other side of the medical system either.

Nice touch from your Dept. of Radiation, to celebrate the completion of your treatment.

I remember a couple of years ago when my mom completed her treatment from rectal cancer, the patient gets to ring a bell in the hospital to let everyone know they were finished with their treatment. She was so happy to ring that bell after many weeks of radiation.
Unfortunately she died 2 weeks later. confused

I have 3 of the Radiation Completion Certificates. SRT, Rad for suspected met and Rad to keep my boobs from growing during HT. I rang the bell for the first two, but couldn't bring myself to ring it for the boobs.

At one point my wife and I were going through Rad at the same time. We started on the same day at the same time, different machines. I made shirts for us to wear.

The front was a great picture of the two of us taken in a glowing sunlight. It read, "We are a Radiant Couple".

The back read "Radiation Treatment Countdown". Her's had 15 numbers and mine had 35. We wore the shirts a couple of times per week and had the techs cross out and initial the appropriate number (s).

They took pictures of us in the shirts and put a short article in their monthly publication at MD Anderson.

Funny, I also came upon my certificate of radiation completion a month ago. It had a nice picture of me and the group.

I ended up throwing it away. It's just not pleasant for me.
