hello, everybody.
today, i received one of my prescript
ions for my biopsy on next week. to give you a small heads up, right after my 40th birthday, i went in for a physical, my main dr. recommended me to a uro, 'cause my PSA is 5.5. my uro performed a DRE and found nothing, so he is recommending a biopsy for next tuesday afternoon.
my question is has anybody taken the medicine ciprofloxacin? i'm supposed to take one before and after the biopsy. so, i was wondering how did the medicine affect you.

Probably half the men on this forum have taken Cipro at one time or another. Most probably experienced no SE's but the internet has lots of horror stories about
the damage these kinds of meds can do to the tendons. My uro likes it for prostatitis but not to protect against infection from biopsy. He and many other docs believe that many men are resistance to Cipro for the bacterial infection from biopsy. My uro likes an injection of Rocephin 30-60 minutes before biopsy.

Hello Sammas,
There was a time when my Urologist had me popping Cipro like Tic-Tacs and I never had much by way of side effects. I had four biopsies and was given a few Cipro each time. My uro also prescribed Betadine enemas to reduce the risk of infection and to make the procedure even more fun.
You'll do fine.

Take the cipro. I had a very bad infection after my only biopsy and required a strong round of antibiotics to knock it. I had not been given anything prior to the biopsy, and within 24 hours I was extremely sick. Would not want anyone to experience what I did.

I took copro for two weeks before mY biopsy. Don't know if this is coincidence or not but now my hands lock up and my Achilles heel is always stiff and painful. Also now have pain in my knee joints.

I've taken Cipro over a dozen times with no issues. Just don't try mountain climbing or running a marathon and you'll be fine. I believe you have to take Cipro for at least 7 days for it to be effective. Most doctors have switched to Leviquin for biopsies. I had a UTI after my first biopsy and no issues on 12 others.

Hello, John T. My uro wants me to take two pills of cipro: one before and one after the biopsy.

Sammas,
My husband's uro did it a little differently. Frank went in about
a week before biopsy and doctor
swabbed his rectum. Lab grew the swab and challenged with antibiotics to determine which drug
would be effective at keeping him infection-free. Then, he was given Cipro before/after biopsy.

Hi, redheadskier.
did your hubby take two pills?
how long after the biopsy did he receive the results?
how was he affected by the pills?

Sammas,
I actually think he pre-medicated with two pills before we left house and took Cipro
for three days afterwards. All he noticed from medication was some stomach upset.
He got biopsy results two days later by phone from the urologist. I now believe if a doctor calls with results, the news is bad. Otherwise, someone lower down the food chain would make the call.

Thank you, redheadskier.
My uro, wants me to take one pill before and one pill after the biopsy. I'm trying to stay positive, but I'm nervous as all get out. The biopsy doesn't bother me so much as what the results could be.

I'm actually a little surprised your uro is jumping right into a biopsy before checking you for inflammation/infection etc. Did you have sex the night before your PSA test etc., there are several things which can raise your PSA short term...maybe another PSA test in a couple of weeks after a course of antibiotics and abstinence??? Remember, I'm not a doctor...

no, i didn't have sex, but i did pleasure myself two days before. also, i sit in a deskchair for long periods that needs a bit more cushion, especially 2wards the edge of the seat. do you really think that would raise a psa to a 5.5?
my uro says a 5.5 for a 40 yr. old is high, so i'm guessing that is why he's recommending a biopsy. my uro's name is dr. peter nieh (pronounced same as
KNEE
) he's a urologist at emory university in atlanta, ga. you know anything about
him, or any good uro's in atlanta, ga?
