I made it home from Los Angeles last night. I had a great visit with my son and a fantastic meeting with Dr. Turner (Scholz, Lam and Turner. I have a lot of research to do after meeting with Dr. Turner and before I take the next path on this journey.

In the meantime I need to get this hernia fixed.

My Oncologist arranged an appointment with a surgeon for me today. Sherry and I met with him and feel very comfortable with him doing the surgery. He said that my hernia was not in any danger of causing me issues right now and could actually wait.

I explained that I was leaving town on September 8th and did not want to wait. I further explained that it would appear that I cannot be cured of my cancer and all I have going for me is as much QoL as I can get.

We convinced him to see the light from our point of view and I am scheduled for surgery on Friday. I have a pre-surgery meeting tomorrow afternoon.

My follow up appt is scheduled for Sep 8th, so if all goes well, Sherry and I should be able to leave and keep with our plans to trek north towards GFMPH.

The surgery will have to be open because of my da Vinci surgery. Seems robotics follow the same pathway from the navel and that option is not on the table for me.

Well at least for the next few weeks I should be able to lay the cancer down and give it a rest.

Another "Bonus Day" today. My Onco pulled some pretty good strings to arrange this so quickly and the surgeon is actually an Oncology Surgeon. Have to believe he is pretty good.

My hernia was on the right side so they were able to do laparoscopic surgery, so yours must be on the left side. Interesting. Well, get it fixed, checked, and then hit the road to ny.

Sonny – Glad your visit(s) went well. I’ve had 3 hernia surgeries. The first in 1998 was more painful and had a longer recovery than my RP. The last one was a year ago and was not bad at all. Like you, due to my robotic RP, it was done open; the issue being scar tissue. My surgeon said due to improvements in mesh and medicines there is little difference in recovery time or post op pain. He said if I’d had an open RP he would have done a laparoscopic repair. I think you’ll be fine and ready to roll on the 8th.

I had an inguinal hernia (right side) fixed at the same time I had a TURP operation back in 2011.

Two surgeons, one doing the TURP, the other the hernia, sort of a "tag team" deal.

Uneventful. Took a few days to recover from the relatively minor pain, don't lift things, etc., but overall the two fixes went well and recovery was quick.

You'll do fine.

Good lucky Sonny.

I lived with my belly button bump for a few years... I bumped into something and it hurt like heck for a week.. Had surgery a couple weeks later.

Good morning all, thanks for the never ending support.

81, mine is a inguinal hernia, left side. Really hoping this thing doesn't lay me up too long. Lots to do and miles to drive towards GFMPH.

On another note, in the mail today came a complete report of my consultation with Dr. Turner. Very nice and very complete recap of our conversation. It had also been sent to my Onco. I called the Onco's office and spoke with my trial coordinator who arranged the surgery and told her to look for the consultation report.

She said at this time I am still on the trial. Not taking the TAK700, but I am now in the follow up group complete with periodic scans and tests. It appears that I will not officially leave the trial until I start some other program. That works for me, she is a gem and takes care of everything for me with just one call. She gave me her direct line and told me not to hesitate to use it.

You folks have a great day, as for me I am off to the pre-surgery meeting.

I had an inguinal hernia repaired; open with mesh. It is great now! I am very glad I had it done. However, being realistic with you, that first few days after surgery was tough. It hurt! Also, it was probably 6-8 weeks before I could stand to use the pump in that area. Good luck!

Methinks Sonny will need the drink a lot more than Goodlife or CajunJeff.

Of the three Amigos, the one most qualified to do any nursing duties is the Clearwater Cowboy who unfortunately cannot be in Rochester this time. Last year at the is time the 3 of them got Sonny hitched and this year they may be getting him stitched.

Clearwater Cowboy and his bride proved he can undo the stitches that TC Vegas was sporting at Sonny's this past April.

My experience with inguinal hernias (I've had three --- gotta quite lifting heavy things) was similar to Southern Comfort's. The first few days were tough, as in sit in the recliner and move slowly when you have to. As I remember, I was told I could do very little for the first month or so ... restricted to lifting 10 pounds or less. As I found out, you can screw the surgery up by doing too much too soon.

Finished with the pre-surgery exam, blood, EKG and so on. The only thing they took excetion to was the natural herb sleep aid I use and the Krill fish oil. Have to stop them until afterwards.

I do plan to take it easy after the surgery. But, tomorrow and
Thursday I plan to load the RV with the heavy stuff and get as much done as I can.

The post op appointment will delay us leaving by a day, no biggie, just have to cancel one overnight stop.

The thought of leaving for GFMPH will get me through this, ALONG WITH SOME VERY GOOD PAINS MEDS I AM SURE.

You'll do fine with the surgery. I had it 6 months after the end of RT and they did an open procedure on me as well. After about a week I was feel okay and ready to get into trouble. I ended up taking two weeks off work, mostly because I wanted extra time on the beach.

and milk that, "no heavy lifting" for all it's worth - you don't get good excuses like that very often.
