Has anyone had a PSA flare following radiation?

Our oncologist said my husband's increase in PSA could be due to the radiation treatment he had in his neck. Has anyone experienced an increase following Ra?

A PSA rise after radiation as a primary treatment is a stated risk. Even though my RT was adjuvant, they still warned me that my PSA might rise for a short time, as the cancerous cells are not killed, but simply damaged to prevent reproduction. But RT seems to make them mad at the same time it neuters them.

Oh, wait, they might have been talking about the patient, not the cells

Ummm, sounds peculiar to me. We're talking Prostate-Specific Antibodies here -- Not larynx-specific antibiodes. Most of the tissues that can produce PSA would be out of the line of fire. I'd be interested to hear how that reaction is suspected to occur.

doesn't make any sense to me, there shouldn't be any natural connection to the two things. ask your doctor to explain why this is the case?

Correct me, but I remembered that the RT was for PCA mets, and answered based on that.

Thanks, 142, didn't have my head turned on. PCa metastases are prostate tissue gone walkabout. That they might release PSA when zapped in other parts of the body would not be that odd.

Thanks all, I called the onc and he confirmed that the bony mets (the Ra was to the skull base) could release PSA. Also, that Zytiga can cause PSA to go up slightly and then down. He noted that the Zytiga resulted in an initial drop and then a rise a month later. We have decided to stay on the Zytiga until we see Dr. Myers in early October since he likes to play with it and other drugs. That would be just over the one more month recommendation. We are also being considered for the enzalutamide and Prostvac trial.
