yesterday.
He said my "left side is full of cancer". Mostly number 3 with a couple of 4's - if you know what that means. He said I was in the "intermediate" category, as 4-5's would be aggressive.
I'm only 48 and consider myself very healthy. Never smoked, eat right, exercise hard, etc. so I'm a little blown away. My dad has battled cancers since he was 60 so I've been around it.
I went to Emory Urology in Atlanta. I chose them over my local urologist because when I went to the appointment I only met with the nurse, and to be honest she scared the heck out of me about my 4.5 PSA. She even mentioned castration as a treatment!
However, to get in quickly at Emory I had to pick "one of the new doctors". My biopsy last Friday was awful. My hemmorhoids haven't bothered me in years but ever since Friday they're hurting pretty bad. The urologist has a good education, UCLA medical school, a 5-year residency at Harvard Urology in Boston, etc. and finished a fellowship within the past year.
Two things worry me about him though:
- During the biopsy, he said my prostate was "small", and that was good, but he left and brought in another doctor he said was "more senior than I to help make sure we get a good biopsy". The older doctor coached him through the biopsy with the machine. "Turn your wrist left, etc."
- At my second consultation, he sent me to the lab for blood work but when I got there I realized he had given me someone else's lab orders.
I'll read all the relevant posts tonight and this weekend, but he's recommending the robotic surgery and says he does it "better than most doctors". I got the sense he deals mostly with bladder cancer, from talking to the male nurse and the Dr. said something yesterday about his experience and bladders and removing the prostate during that surgery. I'd estimate the doctor is about 35 - 40 or so. His academic resume looks strong, but I'm worried about how many of these robotic surgeries he's actually performed.
My questions are: Who are some of the best doctors/clinics, etc. to get a second opinion? Should I ask for a second opinion from a doctor at Emory? I've lived in Georgia for 10 years but I think Emory has a good reputation. I'll go anywhere. Luckily I have good insurance, a good wife, a lot of frequent flier miles, and a little money in the bank so I want the best.
And, would this (young doctor) give you some concerns regarding this type surgery?
Thanks!
