Who’s on your team?

When the call comes
We start building a team
Some members are obvious
Who’s on your team?

Family is first
But, what is family?
Wife, children, brothers, sisters
Who’s on your team?

Then comes the family we choose
Who becomes that bigger family?
Friends, Co-workers, Ministers, Priests, Rabbis, Gurus
Who’s on your team?

Then comes the band of brothers
Those who have been where we are
Who understand the struggle
Who’s on your team?

Last come the team in white coats
Some you never meet, but they are there
Even the transporter is on the team
This is my team

My team is big, much bigger than I understood before
And, we’re all in it together
I can’t beat it on my own
We can beat it, together.

Can I be on your team?

Thanks for putting this out there. It's sometime we all need to remember - the the PC thing is a team sport. Even when we don't want it to be.

My family supports me, my wife has been very supportive, but she doesn't know anything, and is the type that leaves the research to me. But its fine, she is very supportive, and on my team. I just tell my kids that everything is ok and I'll let them know if its ever not ok. So i would say my team is..

My wife, one friend and one cousin, who went through the surgery 4 years ago, my 3 sisters, you all on here, my PCP, whom i've consulted prior to making a decision on surgery, and my Surgeon along with his highly competent and communicative staff.

I would say my friends are sort of part of my team, they have all been very supportive (5-6 close friends) but i try not to make PC the topic of conversation when i am with them.

This idea came to me as I was thinking back over the last week or so. I actually saw my surgeon for about 5 minutes on surgery day. I also saw a couple of different residents, several students, a surgical fellow, the anesthesiologist and an NA, plus numerous others, right down to the gal that pushed my wheelchair down to the exit door when my wife picked me up. What strikes me is that we spend all this energy researching our lead treatment person (RO, surgeon, whichever), and don't even think much about the rest of the team, and who, in many ways, are just as important to our outcome.

As in basketball, you can have the very best single player around, but it takes a team to win consistently. 

We need everyone to work with us, including the unknown customer service person on the other end of the phone line today when I placed my next order of Zytiga. I need it here on time and when they say it will show up.

Halbert, Your poem literally brought me to tears. I am so grateful to have found this forum where I can finally share with those who truly do understand what PCa is all about. HW is MY team. Since we live in a small town, up til now Gary's medonc and staff have been more than a team...I call them his angels. We are so close I take the receptionist granddaughter swimming and the nurse brought Gary Led Zepplin tunes to listen to on her iPod while he got treatment.
Of course our family and friends have been there supporting us too.

All the folks you mentioned.

The members of this forum who gather when they can every 6 months for GFMPH in Spring in Baton Rouge this year and Orlando next year and every last weekend of Sept in Rochester have become like family.

With respect to the white coats, I had two urologists/surgeons (n0w one), one radiation oncologist and two medical oncologists plus my cardiologist and GP. Before deciding on SBRT I saw several other nationally renowned RO's.

I have some members of the team I have never even met as team members put me onto their respective prayer groups.
