Has anyone had their surgery done at Duke University?
Any suggestions as to the best surgeon?
Thanks

In eating oatmeal as I post this. I don't know if any, but as you probably know Duke is one of the leading medical centers in the country. There are many members here from the area and they will assist you in that subject sooner than later.

I met with the seventh or eigth one down on this list, Judd Moul. He seemed very good, as I'm sure the others are. They are world-class, I believe.

Duke is very much surgery oriented for PCa. If surgery is the route you are interested in pursuing, I can't imagine many places much better. As Dwayne said, world class.

Dr Polascik at Duke Urology biopsied my seminal vesicle. He is the only doctor there doing MRI fusion biopsy of the prostate, collaborating with Dr Gupta in radiology.
During my consultation visit with Dr Polascik he discussed his surgical experience in
open surgery and robotics. I believe he was trained at Johns Hopkins.
He may be an excellent surgeon, but his personality sucks. Plus, if you decide to see him, be prepared for a 2-3 hour wait.

Thank you for your responses.
I'm actually a friend of the patient, just trying to help with collecting as much information as possible so the best decision can be made.
Since posting, we found out that Dr Ferrindino is in his insurance network. I remember reading a couple of good reviews on him and my friend's insurance also rates him highly on patient care.
We would love to hear more on him.

Hello, oatmealnut and welcome. Is your friend dead set on surgery? If not, and if you want some thoughts about
options, please feel free to post some of his specific stats and we will be glad to help. Most of us - whether we have chosen surgery or radiation - generally advise patients to get a variety of opinions before making a decision.

My friend (John) was just diagnosed. His biopsy showed cancer in 2 out of 18. One was a 3+4 (4mm - 20%) and the other 4+3 (O.85mm - 5%). His PSA was 9. DRE normal (as per 2 different doctors).
Bone and abdominal scans clear.
He is having his slides sent to John Hopkins for a second opinion today.
The immediate question is: how fast should one take action with the information we have now. How detrimental would be to take a few (or several) weeks to a couple of months to decide what to do?

Oatmealnut, prostate cancer is typically slow growing so the time frame you indicated for a decision should not cause any added issues. Getting the slides re-read at JHU is an excellent idea and will give you some certainty re the diagnosis.
With those stats there are a lot of options for potential cure. Obviously you are looking at surgeons. I also suggest that he seek out doctors who specialize in LDR Brachytherapy, HDR Brachytherapy and SBRT. Getting educated and doing his due diligence will give him confidence about
his final decision.
Jim
P.S. How old is John?

Thank you for your response.
John just turned 60 and is in good general health (no other issues) and in good physical shape.
