I kind of burned out on forums a couple of years ago, so I have not posted or read anything lately. I did get a lot of support on this forum and learned much about my prostate cancer, so I thought I should report back since there have been some changes.
I had an agressive Gleason 8 cancer that was treated by surgery in January 2007. My psa for the 4 years after surgery was about .02, in other words undetectable. In 2011 my annual psa started to gradually rise. My doctor and I agreed to just wait and see. Even after doubling twice, it was still below .09. Over the past two years the psa kept edging up and doubled over a four month period so it was now above .2 . This has always been the point when I thought I would pay more attention.
I had my second IMRT radiation treatment today. Only 37 more to go. I am a an active 74 year old and have plans to live into my 90s. My oncologist said I might easily live well for another 10 years without treatment, but radiation could give me a chance to make it into my 90s. I'm taking that bet.
