7 1/2 weeks post op
3 1/2 weeks post cath

I told my physician about this during my 6 week post op visit. (This was 10 days ago). He said it's irritation from the cath. But, I'm beginning to wonder if this is normal. I keep telling myself that it's because the cath was in for 22 days.

Sitting seems to bring it on. It makes me stand up slowly... (protecting it I guess). I think it may also be correlated with how tired I am. (Is that possible?)

Anyone else have penis pain this long after cath removal? It doesn't always hurt...but I'm aware of it alot.

Stream is good. Someone told me if it was a UTI there would be cloudy urine and/or burning. Don't have either.

I'm wondering too if it might have anything to do with the fact that I've been having erections lately. But...it hurt when I went to see the doc...before I began my "rehab".

I hate to call him just 10 days after he told me what he says he thinks it is. I also know if he says "come on back in" it won't be to just talk. So...i don't want to over react. LOL (ouch...hurts when I laugh)

Mine was sore on the inside for almost a year. But not too painful. Not enough to stop my "rehab". It's just not natural to have a tube as thick as a sharpie jammed all the way up your penis. I cringe when I think about the things they must have done to me while I was out. How did they get that thing up there? I'm sure your pain diminish and eventually totally pass in the next few months. But tell the docs all concerns.

Bad pain in the penis was the first sensation I was aware of when I came to. It's been sore on and off anytime the cath's been out since. Today...it's not sore at all but as the day wears on...and it could be referred.

That's my thinking too JFL. It's irritation, as my doc said.

And everyone's anatomy is different. I just didn't see many who had been sore this long in the search function.

IT, i remember having PP, on and off for quite a while. It exacerbated when i peed, and also when mr erection showed its head. But sometimes for no reason. I think its normal. The penisis attached to all sorts of apparatus that the Davinci played tug of war with.

With that said, i think if its bothering you mentally, you shouldn't hesitate to call the doc. Maybe its just a phone conversation with him or his PA

I don't remember pain, exactly, but the discomfort, particular in certain kinds of chairs, did last several months. And yes, erections for the first few months felt...weird. Stretching and stuff. I suppose I put it all down to (a) basic surgical trauma...lots of things got pushed around down there and (b) well, a chunk of something that always was there is now gone, so other things have to move in and fill up the space, one way or another.

Surgery often affects the pudendal nerve that goes to the penis. As Prat said, that nerve often gets stretched, pulled or nicked in the process. The pain usually goes away on its own as the nerve heals. If not, there are other measures available - give it time.

Island Time,
I'm 31 days post-op and 13 days since they pulled the catheter. Right now, it hurts to pee and I get random stabbing pains in my penis. Not enough to call the doc, but enough to let you know it's there. I had the nerves and blood vessels removed from both sides, so erections won't be possible. I'm just assuming it's part of the healing process, so I'm trying to be patient.

Hang in there and let us know how it goes.

Thanks....

-halbert....chairs make all the difference. I've been using one of those leather "wing back lawyer's" chairs (that reclines) that's not exactly Lazy Boy soft. A pillow makes a big difference. When I'm out and have no choice but to sit in a hard chair I tend to favor one buttock then the other.

-Tony...I've had those stabbing pains too. I was reading down through your sig. thinking to myself "Yes, yes, YES'" as I read your down grade by Epstien. Until I got to, and re-read twice about the node. Then thought "****".






Oddly enough....it's not hurt since my last post early yesterday until tonight. I had to push myself more than I was comfortable doing to get power back on my boat. (Turned out after all the outside trouble shooting it was just a circuit breaker). When I came back in and sat down there were just twinges of the same pain again before it quit completely.

Time is my friend I believe. Thanks for helping me out guys.

halbert started a recent thread on the side effects of radical prostatectomy.

The idea of that thread is to have a comprehensive list of what HW/PC members have experienced so that newcomers in the future who reference that thread may have a complete list and clear expectation of what they may encounter. (It has been noted that sometimes men receive a less-than-complete listing or expectation from their surgeon...so a peer-to-peer network like HW/PC may be helpful to fill in patient education gaps.)

You guys should post your "penis pain" issues there. I'm sure halbert—and other newcomers in the future—will appreciate your contribution.

(I'll post in that thread so that it comes up to the front page, then you can add to it.)

From the catheter I ended up with a blood blister just on the inside.

It broke a few times and then finally healed.

That's good information.

I think it's better. It's not always easy to tell.

I've never had to measure progress over this long a period if time before. But, I think it's better even though it's not gone.

Dr. Island Time says that as long as I keep peeing I'll be alright.

I saw this on a t-shirt. I don't know if it was talking about PC (I suspect not), but it applies:

First it gets better
Then it gets worse
Then it gets real
Then it gets different
Then it gets real different

For me, the real different is good. Different, yes. But still good in it's own way. Better in some.

One thing that follows from what the Tall one said is that the pain (being caused by nerve irritation) is often felt somewhere else than the actual site of the irritation. This is called "referred pain" and often that annoying pain at the end of your member is actually caused by nerve irritation in the vicinity of your bladder neck where your urethra is stitched back together. That's why sitting on something hard before you are completely healed can cause a pain in your penile meatus despite the fact that you aren't sitting on Mr. Happy. The irritation is in the part of the nerve that you are sitting on -- you just feel it where the nerve ends.
