Nausea and Diarrhea During IGRT?

So far I have had 10 fractions of IGRT. Beginning on day one I felt nausea continued to day two but had a weekend and I was okay. Starting the next week of fractions, I had a little less nausea but still had it each day. Talked to RO and he reiterated to watch my diet. Since I have sessions each morning, I stay away from greasy and gassy food. Beginning this week I started getting diarrhea symptoms. By Wednesday at 3am, full on liquefied diarrhea. I have been that way since Wednesday. Could this be radiation treatment related? Anyone else have these issues? Thanks.

I had lose bowels during IGRT treatments. Diarrhea is possible. Complain to the RO again. Diet can help, but you might need some meds to help out.

I had some clear mucous in my stools (how's that for a pretty picture?), but no diarrhea and no nausea. Sorry to hear and I hope it's a temporary thing for you--presumably you don't get treated over the weekend so maybe that will be helpful.

Hang in there! I complete 39 sessions of SRT IGRT a couple of months ago. My RO told me not to change anything in my daily routine or diet (I do eat low fat.) I never experience any urinary, gastric or bowel problems during and after my treatment. I did experience some fatigue about a month after completion of IGRT and still have a little fatigue in the evenings.

Thanks all, just got home from ER... 3 days of straight hard core diarrhea took a toll and I was dehydrated. Since my RO is in the same hospital, he came to the ER also. He thought it was early for these issues but couldn't rule them out. ER doc didn't find anything else to cause it, but still wouldn't rule out a bug of some type (although no fevers). RO might change up treatment as lymph node treatment may be the culprit. Hope this crap goes away, so to speak. -JR

I think you're right that you may be experiencing bowel inflammation, although it's very early. Some people are just more sensitive. I think the problem with medication is they may not want to give you something that lowers bowel motility because that can send the problem in the other direction. Are you taking an anti-inflammatory like Aleve? I once took an anti-inflammatory suppository specific for bowels called CANASA (mesalamine). Maybe ask your RO.

You may be right that the nausea was the result of lymph nodes near your upper bowel. Everyone's anatomy is different wrt where they are located, and if you are slim, it could be worse. That seems to be gone at least.

Hi TA, I have been taking ibuprofen intermittently depending on inflammation issues I feel. I am going to talk to the RO on Monday and see if they want to give me anything or tweak the treatments. I will discuss the AI suppository you mention. As we all know, doing my best to keep bowls empty and bladder full... Hard to do with all these issues starting up so soon. Thanks. -JR

I started having diarrhea about three days into my radiation. The doctor recommended over the counter probiotics. I am not sure if they helped a lot but continue to take them. Hang in there. It does get better.

sorry you had to get to the ER. The probiotics should help. I took daily advil for during the entire RT. Seemed to help.

I don't understand why you would have nausea but diarrhea and constipation is common. Just hope you don't get damage to your rectum like I did.
