I have been asked by prostate cancer researchers at the broad Intitute in Boston to share this page with folks who may be interested in joining the group. Naturally I thought of Y'all. They are on the ground floor of a genome project that will be modeled after the MBC metastatic breast cancer project. Simply go to the Facebook page and ask to join.

Todd –
This project looks like a winner!
A few screens down the
opening page poster "Michael Dunphy" says:
"The Prostate Cancer Project is a direct-to-patient genomics initiative that will be launched by the Broad Institute and modeled after the Metastatic Breast Cancer Project (www.mbcproject.org). In order to build a project that meets the needs of patients, we started this page to work directly with the prostate cancer community on elements of the study design, website, and ultimately what kinds of aggregate data we will provide."
And just a few posts after that, some poster pair named "Todd-Amanda Seals" says:
Todd has entered the building.
(Well, if so, then the building is better for it!).
I have added the page to my bookmarks and am going to keep tabs on it!

This really is a good thing. If science can map the genetics of prostate cancer then we have a better chance of taming the beast or perhaps killing it once and for all.
I encourage members to join the group. It is kind of slow at the moment but as it grows it will gain momentum and grow into something that will help others down the road.

Todd,
Is there a way to participate without joining a facebook group? This is a public facebook group. It should probably be a private group.
Facebook privacy settings are complicated and they change frequently. Perhaps they are designed to confuse and trick people into giving away more information than they really intend to share. Some people may not want the average visitor to their facebook page to know they are a member of a prostate cancer project. There is still some employment and workplace discrimination around such issues, among other considerations.
Thanks for sharing this information.

I might have been interested, but I just don't "do" Facebook.

Thanks for the input. You make good points. The Facebook page was secondary. I will post the question and paste the reply here

Todd-Amanda Seals thank you for raising this issue, it's critical that we address it. We are thinking now about
ways that we can provide a route for people to participate in the group if they are uncomfortable joining. One thought is to leave the group
open so anyone can read the posts, and those who do not want to join can submit feedback to us via email at prostatecancerproject@broadinstitute.org including a copy/paste of the post they want to respond to. Then we will post back to this group anonymously on their behalf. What do you think of that approach?

Thanks proscapt for bringing this up. I don't 'do' Facebook either.
And thanks Todd for following up! Those smart people at the Broad Institute should be able to find a solution...

Todd - I just want to say thanks for bringing this up and I hope there is an alternative to facebook. My concerns about
facebook in no way detract from my respect for you and the many ways in which you contribute to this community.
