Been running low grade fever for about two weeks. CBC looks ok with no infection. PSA has gone from .06 to .1 in past 90 days. See Uro about this on Tuesday.

IM Dr. said it could be slight infection in prostate bed residual tissue and put me on cipro.

Anybody heard of this?

I was also a T2C with -SV, -Mar, and my URO talked about Tissue and I was at 0.2. I had to force the issue and said time for Radiation Treatment. He would have waited until .5 or more... not sure. He never countered my position with Cipro which could help prove/disprove the theory of remaining tissue.

The old-old levels to start SRT were at 0.4, the current conservative levels are 0.2, and some of the latest studies suggest over 0.03 start to act. Some studies show that starting SRT at less than 0.2 you have two times better outcomes than starting between 0.2 and 0.5. The counter argument to early treatment success is because they may be treating benign Tissue which skews the numbers.

I would like to find a report showing how many people with clean margins have a PSA that goes up and levels off.... 1% - 14% - 35%? without this it is very hard to know how to weigh the decision to act.

Never heard of that, but it might be possible. That you have an infection is possible. The cipro should clear that up.

Good to hear you're seeing the URO about it. You wouldn't expect PSA to raise that fast, except in the case of prostatitis or other infection there.

Do let us know what the URO says - don't be surprised if it's something like, "Glad you IM put you on cipro, let's give that a couple of weeks and retest."

I just put a posting out ("Reading resources for benign psa recurrence" ) that has some reading links that my be of interest to you. This area of uPSA due to benign tissue or BPH type tissue has been getting a little press. But, if it happening as much as suspected (as maybe in our two cases), then, boy, it sure needs to be discussed more openly, and urologists need to be prepared to discuss or try to resolve before handing guys off to further treatment. I had never heard of benign recurrence and when I got my recent detectables was truly shocked -- thought I was going to be in bad shape eventually. That still may be true. But maybe not. Time will tell. Wish best for your case.

now that I see you're PSA history, I am thinking more of recurrence than anything else. That's a pattern that should be evaluated and one option is possible SRT. Could be benign tissue, but could be something else. I am not thinking it less likely that the cipro will have any effect on PSA.

Do let us know what the doc says.

Actually was prepared for this last year-in fact, already have markers placed (ouch!).

Although ciprofloxacin is a wide-spectrum antibiotic, it does not resolve all infections.
And there may not even be an infection...
