As most of you probably know already, we are now in the third cycle of our HW PC Book Club, in the process of reading Tall Allen's "Thaw's Hammer," to be discussed in June. (I'll bump up the thread for that from time to time, along with posting excerpts from the book on Tuesdays—"Tuesday Teasers").
The article below looks at some of the interesting differences between traditional book clubs (Sunday tea and
cookies sorts of meetings) and the new, online versions. It's short, but does note some significant distinctions between the two. Maybe worth a quick look.
Naturally, as vast as the web is, there are a good many online book clubs that have formed within medical discussions forums in particular (certainly what our own HW PC Book Club is), so we do have company. These clubs vary in kind and quality, but they all do seem to serve a useful purpose, and flourish as they are needed.
Interestingly, my sampling of a few of them seems to indicate that most of them are following one of our own guidelines, that the books discussed, non-fiction or otherwise, bear some kind of relation to the medical condition that is the topic of the forum.
