When I got out of college in '69 there was not yet a Selective Service System lottery, much less an all volunteer system. Six of my high school classmates were already dead in Vietnam. Rather than be drafted into the Army or Marines, I joined the Air Force and became a Navigator on the KC-135 air refueling aircraft, in the Strategic Air Command. Went off to that aspect of the war several times, and racked up around 100 missions, mostly out of Thailand, and 2,300 hours of flight time in 7 years.
Soon had a couple of children, and stayed on active duty longer than I otherwise might have. IF I had just gotten out after 4 years and pursued another line of study/work, things could have been different. Eventually, I did get out, but soon embarked on what would turn out to be a career of Federal Civil Service work for the Air Force, ... mostly for the job security, stability for the children, benefits and a retirement plan, etc. IF I had left that line of work in less than 7 years, again, things could have been different.
I served my Nation, and many of my responsibilities, but I did not fully follow the potential dreams of my youth, to study the scientific wonders and mysteries of this world and the universe as a full time career pursuit.
