PSA 9.3 after Cipro. Need help understanding results.

Hi Everyone,

My husband, 56, had symptoms of a UTI about two weeks ago, and his blood test that day showed PSA levels at 33. The doctor also diagnosed him acute prostatitis and prescribed Cipro. He got retested one week and 2 days later, and his PSA result was 9.3. Today, the doctor wants him to get an ultrasound and a blood test for psa, CEA, and calcium levels.
I'm very worried since it seems like his doctor thinks the cancer has metastasized. Is it possible Cipro might've affected his test results since he got retested so soon? He complains of weakness, slight weight loss, and slight back pain. He's also had a persistent cough for a while now, but we weren't sure if it was due to his meds for high blood pressure. Two years ago, his PSA was 0.8.

Any help is appreciated!

What cancer? Your husband doesn't have cancer until a biopsy shows him that he has cancer.
After being only 9 days on Cipro, the PSA took a nose-dive, a prostatitis can take a long time on Cipro to be cured. So don't jump to conclusions. Did your husband have a DRE? What were the results?

What do you mean "his doctor thinks his cancer has metastasized?" Has he been diagnosed with prostate cancer? If so, you left that out of your post - what were the biopsy findings? So are you saying that he has prostatitis on top of prostate cancer? Or are you just making up the part about prostate cancer?

Love the " audacity " of TA's last sentence...we need more of that on this forum...tho she does have a "face saver" i.e "it seems" and then the rest...or it could simply mean she just neglected to give all the details... given a .8 psa 2 years ago......or could that have been 0.08...she may or may not clear this up for us...or fall to self inflicted embarressment... hope not...we are on her side... time will tell...oh and for the purists here...rote welcomes have become rituals that any programer can squeeze the life out of...aka..."clouds without rain"... on a parched horizon... redface shakehead

I agree with the gist of what the previous Replies implied. No need to get the cart before the horse. Get the results of the tests that have already been ordered, and see what they all say. If it's only prostatitis, the PSA trend could settle down after a while. No need to jump to any "metastatic" speculation, particularly when there apparently hasn't been any DRE or biopsy and/or any type of imaging to confirm the existence of any prostate cancer in the first place, much less metastatic. Keep getting frequent PSA tests.
That being said, continue to report any symptoms to the doctor. If it may be back pain, show where it is, allow it to be examined, and report its history, and any changes. Same with the weight loss.
