went through that a couple of years after RT. A few things contributed to that: radiation proctitis, an internal hemorrhoid, and an anal fissure (tear) from straining too hard. A colonoscopy and a little laser treatment helped with the radiation proctitis, then it was adding plenty of fibre to my diet and now I use mirlax daily to ensure that things pass easily and predictably. That and drinking plenty of water, walking and avoiding sugar, sugary drinks, salt or anything that dries the colon. When things are really bad doing a sitz bath and using suppositories (get the prescription kind from the doctor, they really help when things are really painful) help manage the pain and discomfort.
It wasn't any one thing for me, but rather a combination of bowel management and active treatment.
He should really complain to his doctor - there are plenty of things they can do to ease is pain. I needed two colonoscopies post RT before the doc found a spot that needed to be treated.
