Glaucoma, Alpha blocker, and PC

So I was surprised to learn that the meds I was prescribed for Urine flow may negatively affect glaucoma! What surprised me the most is both docs (Uro and Ophthalmologist) take extensive med and drug history. Apparently, neither looked at it. I discovered the issue by accident. I called my eye doc, and the good news is I have open angle glaucoma and the alpha-blocker is not an issue, more for those with closed angle.

As the result, I stopped taking the Alfuzosin, about a week ago and see no change in my urinary pattern.

Anyone know how long it takes to stop working?


So if you have Glaucoma and are taking BPH meds call your ophthalmologist. Denis

Denis - You've learned one of the things I learned by accident. That is. . . that your complete medication list really does matter in places you least expect. When I updated my ophthalmologist's file, I mentioned that I had taken FloMax for a one-month period during and immediately after SBRT treatment. He thanked me for even mentioning a medication that I was no longer taking because, per ophthalmic guidelines, if the patient has EVER taken an alpha blocker, even if long ago, there are extra precautions that must be taken if any eye surgery is contemplated.

So, men, if you are or have ever taken FloMax, Rapaflo or the generic equivalent of these, and if you are contemplating any eye procedures (cataracts, anyone?), be VERY sure to mention the past meds to the doc. If he says it doesn't matter, either question him/her deeply, or go elsewhere.

Yes, we must communicate. I am still a bit amazed neither doc caught it. I filled out many pages of health/drug history, but they don't read them apparently.
