My PCP was conscientious about doing the PSA test annually after I reached 50. Eventually, the number started to rise, and he began telling me to see a urologist. I was convinced I would never develop cancer, so I ignored him as the number went into the 3's, then the 4's, then the 5's. When it reached 6.2 he told me in no uncertain terms that I absolutely needed to see a urologist. The urologist found a palpable tumor and did an ultrasound in his office. The cancer diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy, and I was extremely fortunate that surgery found it to still be contained, Gleason 3 + 4, primarily on one side where the tumor could be felt, but also on the other side as well. I'm a lucky guy who behaved pretty stupidly for a number of years. That was nine years ago, and so far I remain undetectable. What a strange and unpredictable disease. That doctor, since retired, and the PSA test probably saved my life, though I know that every time one of us makes that claims, some rise up to say "not true."
he saved you from a shortened, miserable life.
