PSA .18 after finishing Radiation Aug 2018

My dad, currently 73 years old, has a radical prostatectomy just about 8 years ago. Right at his 5 years of being clear he had a recurrence in the prostate bed. He was treated with radiation and all had been clear since he finished in August of 2018. He saw his radiologist in November of 2019 and all was good. Less than .13, which it had also been in August of 2019 at his urologist. He saw his VA dr (different lab, the rest were all done at same lab) in January 2020 and they said his PSA was .06. He just had it done again for urologist visit this coming week (at the lab that have been reporting less than .13) and it’s now saying it’s .18. If it was indeed .06 on January 2, 2020 then it has jumped significantly. We are praying it’s a lab error but of course we do not know yet. Looking at possibly redoing PSA and doing a bone scan. I want to be aggressive with this and not sit back and watch. Will talk more with dr about going back on Lupron. That was only done during radiation, previously. Any thoughts or recommendations?

Right. That’s what we thought too, in regards to labs. He has to have it done for VA also, but I understand what you mean by only looking at numbers from the same lab. Al of this is so stressful and I hate the thought of it spreading or him going through more with it. Praying that there are other treatments aka Lupron, that can help him be around for a long while. I am worried about waiting to test more. Idk how fast it can spread. He has gone off of metforman recently for his diabetes, and was on amoxicillin for a very bad cold at blood draw. Not seeing much of anything that any of those factors could have affected PSA.

He went off of it because the VA said it was affecting his kidney function. However, his endocrinologist did not have the same findings with her blood work. It is interesting that would affect PSA. Thank you for the information.

If the PSA has gone up does that automatically mean that it is somewhere else again? Doctors office said typically it will go to pelvic area or spine, if it spreads. That’s why I’m interested in a bone scan.

A bit more info I gathered. After PSA went up to .24 in October 2017, he had a Lupron shot in January 2018, then 6 month Lupron in February 2018. Started SRT June 2018 for 38 treatments. August 2018 6 month Lupron shot. PSA Jan 2019-Aug 2019 PSA < 0.13 at same lab. VA labs have shown < 0.04 during that same time frame up until Jan 2020 in which it was .06 and the “regular” lab showed .18 Feb 2020

Today the urologist said he was not excited about the PSA. He just wants to retest in 3 months. He thinks it could be a lab error or just something else going on. There was a trace of blood in his urine so he might have an infection or stone.
