Bachbusters by Don Dorsey was my go-to for classical music since it was not my preferred genre. The synthesizer is what the purists expect.

2019Guy - Jazz is like a fine wine of many varieties whereas rock is like beer. I like wine but can drink a lot more beer and enjoy it more except for the calories. Try this link and see if this jazz is more to your liking.

Mumbo mentioned The James Gang. YES!! But the Tommy Bolin version, please. "Alexis" on the Bang album is a real keeper.

Also, love Tommy Bolin's 2 solo albums. Teaser has a nice jazzy rock thing going on. "Savannah Woman" has some of Bolin's greatest guitar work.

If you haven't tried it I recommend The Met Live in HD - live performances of the Metropolitan Opera on the big screen, including great backstage interviews between acts. This season my wife and I went to Akhnaten, Porgy and Bess, and Agrippina. Judging by the amount of gray hair there are more than a few prostate patients in the audience.

A friend goes to the Met Live broadcasts iat the local movie theatre. My mom used to listen to the Texaco sponsored Met Opera radio broadcasts every Saturday. Although classical is my preference I like almost all tyoes of music if done well.

I guess I live in a bubble. But, since there are slim or no chances of seeing the Doors, Stones, Beatles, Allman Brothers, Johnny Cash, Willy Nelson, Eagles in concert - maybe I'll have to look to tribute bands... or maybe Opera/Classical. 🙃 Rock on Bothers!

mattam, there were a number of rock bands in the 70's (and earlier) who borrowed heavily from the classical library and turned out some amazing stuff. Procol Harum, ELO, Alan Parsons Project, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and others.

mattam - The Deadheads having been listening to Greatful Dead tribute bands for years and seem to like them. I saw a Beatles tribute band a few years ago that was very good and at a reasonable price. They dressed the parts for the different music eras of each set and looked fairly close to the Beatles including a left handed bass player. The only problem was the audience was all of us and singing the words to almost every song. I liked the Beatles but never had an obsession with them like that.

You can see the Stones and the Eagles still (after pandemic) if you have a lot of money to put towards some tickets. I could not pull the pin on tickets due to crazy cost. You can also see almost every old time band at a casino around here nowadays if you want to see Paul Revere and the Raiders with only one guy from the original band. The ticket prices are at least reasonable.

I did see the Stones in 1981, but by then they had pretty much become a tribute band of themselves. Lol. Same for the Who. Best concert I ever saw was the Kinks in a small auditorium around the same time. George Thorogood was close second. I don't think you can get a great concert in a stadium with 30,000 people.

Forgot to add Ringo's Allstars in a smaller venue around 1992 - very good. So, in a sense, a nibble of the Fab.

We saw Kansas in concert 7 years or so ago. A shadow of themselves--the high notes just aren't there anymore.

Kansas/Styx used to your together through the Midwest in the mid-70s. Decent concert but I didn't really buy their albums.

Hey Mumbo - I was just going for the poor joke on my jazz comment. Although I never considered myself a jazz musician by any stretch, I played at it for years, even at one point had a restaurant background gig for a summer where we did a classical set and then two jazz sets for all the people who weren't listening. So thanks for the link - a great groove!

David - Sorry I missed the intent of your comment, thought you couldn't handle jazz (can't get started) which I would understand, lots of jazz especially the fusion can get too far out for mortals unless they live in a pot legal state.

I don't think in "jazz" so I can't play it but do appreciate some types. One day, I tried really hard with a jazz chord music book and was able to memorize the basic jazz chord sequence for "Ain't Misbehavin'" and can fool people into thinking I must have some talent until I go back to Gloria and Louie Louie...

I definitely can not play like one of my jazz heroes and sound nothing like this.

Mumbo - Joe Pass is one of the GOJ for sure (gods of jazz), in the guitar realm matched only by Jim Hall in my estimation. Thanks for that and keep working on your changes.

Which brings to mind the old joke: A rock guitarist plays three chords to five thousand people; a jazz guitarist plays five thousand chords to three people.

Oh and my bad pun was a reference to the tune, and jazz standard, "I Can't Get Started". For which I apologize!

Late 70s. I was at UMass Amherst, then known as the Zoo. Lots of memories. Three albums always ready for the turntable, Atlanta Rhythm Sections' Champagne Jam, Bob Seger's Live Bullet, and a two disk live Springsteen bootleg. Saw the Kink's during their wild 78 tour 7 shows in two weeks, right at the top of thier game. Lots of great music slowly drowned out by the dreaded disco, ugh.

David - Perfect pitch is when you throw an accordion down a well and miss the banjo. One of my father’s old jokes and he actually played an accordion two times in his life, before he got married and after my Mom passed away.

kmclark - 1979, Disco Demolition, Comiskey Park, Chicago, Bill Veeck - Blew up a crate of disco records and anti-disco fans stormed the field. Damaged the field and stopped the game. My finest recollection of disco.

Coincidentally, I also saw the Stones at the time, at LA coliseum in 1981, with 80,000 wild youths. The opening act was booed off the stage, some guy named Prince. The crowd was not ready for him at the time. George Thorogood was great. Shredded awesomely , one bourbon, one scotch, one beer please....I finally saw the Stones but I had to leave the infield mid concert as the people I was with considered me too stoned (rare occasion) and had to remove me physically. Must have been good. I was a bit 'flying thru some clouds'.

Speaking of past concerts, I'd been in the army in Germany in 74-75 and heard lots of Queen and Fleetwood Mac on European radio. I moved home to Los Angels in the end of 1975 and it was like no one knew who they were. I saw both of them in concert at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, a small venue. Fleetwood Mac in Novemebr '75 and Queen in March '76. Had like 5th row seats for both. Queen had just released their "Night at the Opera" album. They'd built a runway for Freddie, lined with flashpots like it was a stadium concert. It was great. about that time I also saw Elvis Costello there. Mink Deville and Nick Lowe were opening act. Tickets were something like $20 back then.

As for jazz, I love it. I saw Barney Kessell with Herb Ellis at McCabe's Guitar Shop in about '77. They each arrived on their own, carrying their own guitars and amps and then jammed for a couple hours. McCabes had this back room that was small and acoustically great.

Oh, and I was lucky enough to get tickets for Pink Floyd's "The Wall" in the ticket lottery for the 2nd night show at the LA Sports Arena, February 1980. Another great experience.

Living in LA I went to LOTS of concerts over the years. Now in Montana, not so much.

I got to see the Jam at the Starwood April 14 1978. Have enjoyed Weller over his entire career, but the Jam was something of youth.

I grew up in Arlington Heights IL (Chicago suburb) in the 1960's and missed most of these (too young for the big names starting out) but the Cellar was the local place to go for live rock music. It was in a church basement and later moved to small warehouse building.

Thanks Cyclone for starting this thread; it clearly brings back memories for most of us. And I discovered some music I had never listened to.
My mother (then in her late fifties) wasn't a Rock and Roll fan at all, but when Michelle (Beatles) would come on the radio, she would hum along. I was mostly into 'cool' jazz at the time, but had money for only one LP a month or so (MJQ, Brubeck, Mulligan etc).

Later on, my roommates in the (graduate) dorm didn't bring their musical equipment with them, but the dorm did have a small library with a decent record player, receiver and speakers. One could sign up for this room and be private for a number of hours. My girl friend didn't mind; and her mother didn't know...

As a teaching assistant I had to save quite some time to afford a record player. Got one made by AR (highly recommended at the time) and I still have it. A museum piece by now? The receiver was a Scott one; a brand that is long gone
Back to some music; let's hope that once the pandemic is over we can all join k.d. lang and sing along with this truly impressive performance

Ahh, logo, the Moody Blues. To call them unique doesn't come close. Brilliant, wise, funny, weird, all of the above. We will not see their like again.
